Plutonian Relations Pluto in Synastry Synastry Q & A:

Dawn Bodrogi November 13, 2009

We haven’t delved much into Pluto in synastry, and believe me, we will. But I thought, as a kind of primer, before we get into the deeper waters of Pluto and its significance in interpreting the nodes, I would answer Neeti Ray’s request (check out her excellent blog, Astrology Expressed) and take a little time to explore the way Pluto operates. I know Pluto aspects in synastry spook a lot of people, so some clarity is in order.

All of the outer planets misbehave in synastry. Even the best of contacts give us something to struggle with, though the positive shows itself more pluto in synastryreadily with the easier aspects. Any outer planet contact is at its worst when we’re taken by surprise. When we’re older and have risen up from the metaphorical ashes a few times, we learn what we’re up against. If we’re taken in our innocence, the experiences of the outer planets can be life-altering. They’re meant to be. It’s difficult enough if we have major outer planet contacts within our natal chart, but when the contacts come from outside, via synastry, they can shock, stun and paralyze us, because we never see them coming. The experience comes to us via another, because we are blind to that dynamic within ourselves.

Pluto has a dangerous reputation in synastry. He’s the guy in the room who causes everyone to back away a little. It’s well-deserved. With Pluto comes jealousy, obsession, compulsion, fearsome desire, terror, rage–a fight to the death, to the last gasp. In its more self-destructive phase, it can be a wish for death. With Pluto can come the experience, and hopefully an understanding, of the deepest, darkest desires of human nature: the impulse to destroy, to break taboos, to experience the forbidden. But Pluto is also about the impulse to cleanse, the impulse to heal. Pluto strips away the crust, the rot, the poison that is preventing us from experiencing our own spiritual wholeness. He doesn’t ask our permission or compliance. Pluto will get what it wants, by any means necessary–we only go along for the ride. When Pluto contacts another’s planet, it is to discover these dynamics within itself.

The Martian side of Pluto, in his role as the higher octave of Mars, is the one most visible in synastry. Pluto, in relationship mode, sets out to satisfy desire. No matter the planet it contacts, Pluto desires to be reborn through a deep psycho-sexual exchange with another human being. Pluto can go after whatever it needs to this end with a frightening intensity. There is a vast difference, though, between the way Mars and Pluto operate. Mars simply satisfies desire. In comparison to Pluto, Mars is rather mindless–it sees something it wants and it goes for it. On the other hand, Pluto has an agenda, a purpose, which is ultimately soul-oriented. Pluto wants to test our limits, to strip us down to the essence. Mars is direct. Pluto is not. There is an attraction/repulsion dynamic to Pluto that is interesting to observe, particularly in synastry. Pluto is torn between the known and the unknown; it senses that the unknown offers a kind of death, and is not fool enough to embrace it wholeheartedly, even though it knows that particular death is necessary. Pluto will do this ‘dance of death’ until desire inevitably wins out (it is Martian, after all). Then Pluto will hang on until its mission is accomplished, no matter the suffering. Life may be divided into ‘before’ and ‘after’ this Pluto contact. We are still ourselves, but we are not the same.

Transformation is Pluto’s ultimate goal. Whatever the aspects, Pluto strips away the ineffective coping mechanisms and false confidences of any planet it touches. Pluto will explore that planet’s depths and seek out what isn’t working. Pluto doesn’t involve the willing seduction and surrender that Neptune implies. With Pluto, the attraction is hypnotic, and very often feels unavoidable. The old Self, with all of its imperfect coping mechanisms, struggles to stay alive. Usually, the old Self loses. (Or it runs away, living to fight Pluto another day.) Relationships with heavy Pluto contacts have a Nietzschean tinge: that which does not kill me makes me stronger.

It would be nice if we could say that all these Pluto contacts were for the best, but that would be like putting a Good Housekeeping seal of approval on an earthquake. It’s good to rebuild, but the method or means or timing can be in question, and it doesn’t always have to be from the ground up. Pluto has the task of stripping away any psychological dross that no longer works for us, or affirms what has been shakily established. But Pluto, too, has to learn its limits. The best of Pluto goes forward with awareness. The worst of Pluto doesn’t know the difference between pruning dead branches and uprooting the entire tree. He can be a healer, allowing new growth, or he can be a thug, leaving us lying battered in the street.

Pluto challenges a planet’s strength and integrity. When Pluto touches something in a chart, there is nowhere to hide. Whatever secrets I may have, Pluto will seek them out. Whatever flaws, he will find. If Pluto touches Venus, my values and my self-esteem, and the very way I express my love, will be in question. If Pluto touches Mars, there will be a cutting or burning away to the very essence of desire. Pluto touching Saturn will act like the aforementioned earthquake, tearing down whatever I have built in the house Saturn occupies. With Pluto/Moon contacts, I may well feel that I’m in a struggle for my soul. At the very least, all my previous reference points and security patterns will be threatened. The person with the heavier Pluto influence tends to have the upper hand in relationships, which is why, when I see strong Pluto between charts, I always hope that I see it going both ways. This does, in fact, tend to happen with Pluto, which I find a bit mysterious. It’s as if people who enter into Pluto wrangles have a mutual desire for this kind of intense transformation, and Pluto is their weapon of choice.

Pluto has the tendency to use its penetrating insight as a weapon. Ask anyone who knows someone with Pluto square Mercury. If they’re unhappy with you, they may not say anything for months, and then suddenly unleash a tirade of painful truths that your ten years of analysis wasn’t able to reveal. Pluto to any planet, either natally or between charts, brings this same pattern of silence, observation, analysis, and explosion. They will erupt on you just when you think you’re safe, when you are least able to defend yourself, and often walk away not realizing what they’ve done. Pluto’s powers of observation may be acute, but it’s not the most sensitive or empathetic of energies. Ruthless is the word that comes to mind again.

An unaware Pluto has a number of flaws, chief amongst them the desire and ability to control and manipulate. Pluto often isn’t aware of its power, and will not realize that, from your point of view, your association feels as if you’ve been dropped into the middle of a guerrilla war. Sometimes, they are outright manipulative, and will push your buttons just to see what they can get you to do. Even within a minor aspect between charts, Pluto may try to manipulate the partner’s planet to its own ends. Pluto is always about power, and the undeveloped Plutonian types were often bruised children who have been made deeply insecure. We misuse power when we are trying to redress feelings of powerlessness. Plutonian types have a great deal of charisma, and need to be persuaded to give up these mindless manipulations and focus their power for the good.

When Pluto is involved in a synastry, power is always an issue. Who has it, who uses it, who controls it within the relationship. As we’ve previously discussed, outer planets influence inner (see Synastry Q & A: Gods of Evolution), but those with the inner planet have the ability to make Pluto sharpen its awareness of the way it operates. The inner planets are not helpless against Pluto’s assault. Because the inner planets are so immediate and conscious, they will have a greater understanding of the way Pluto must transform, and inner transformation is ultimately what Pluto is after (after the death and rebirth, that is). No accident that Pluto is the planet that rules analysis and any other means of self-exploration. Pluto’s attempts to plumb your depths are, in fact, motivated by an intense desire to understand itself. In positive mode, Pluto will take the inner planet by the hand and embark on a mysterious, challenging, sometimes frightening journey towards a greater purity of interaction and intention. The inner planet will provide Pluto with a means and a perspective; Pluto will provide the desire, the drive and the will.

Plutonian relationships aren’t for everyone. If you have a lot of air, or prefer peaceful companionship to having your psyche pulled out and splayed all over the place, I wouldn’t recommend them. If you want passion, if you want intimacy, there are other ways. But Pluto associations are unique in their ability to help us get beyond the surface of the mundane world. Not in a dissolving, Neptunian way, but by means of the deep, chthonian mysteries of the realm of matter itself. If you want company on your journey through your own psychological underworld, Pluto is your man.

  1. I am happy that I discovered your blog via Astrology Expressed- I subscribed. Very interesting article. My boyfriend and I have several strong Pluto contacts in our composite chart (Pluto conjunct Moon and Pluto trine Saturn are two). In synastry his natal Pluto-Venus conjunction conjoins my Ascendant. He is definitely the more Plutonian of us though we are both strong 8th house types.

  2. Very interesting article…. I am currently seeing this guy who has exact 0′ natal venus conjunct pluto in libra and wide conjunctions with saturn and jupiter in libra. I myself have conjunctions in libra between my mars, pluto and ascendant. He seems to have the upper hand (sigh..), and i notice i am always giving in (unlike my nature).
    Yr observations are acute.
Hahahaha…Maybe transformation of him or me…

  3. “Pluto to any planet, either natally or between charts, brings this same pattern of silence, observation, analysis, and explosion. They will erupt on you just when you think you’re safe, when you are least able to defend yourself, and often walk away not realizing what they’ve done. ”

i know this is a relationship article but as a scorpio rising with pluto in scorpio exactly conjunct my ascendant,& w/pluto being my chart ruler plus pluto conjunct/sextile/ and trine most of the planets in my chart, i can tell you this is how i personally react to situations! you put into words something i could not verbalize!!

if something deeply upsets me i stay quiet, i think about it over and over for many weeks making myself even more upset, then i react explosively at the most inapropriate time, i never let the other person defend themselves and it usually confuses them and catches them off guard making them think im a nutjob lol. you have hit the nail on the head with your descriptions of pluto.

i really love your blog, you have a way with perfectly explaining aspects in a way i can 100% relate to.
    -Lori

  4. How interesting Lori…I also have pluto conjunct my ascendant in pluto with mars, saturn in my 1st house in scorpio, and moon in 8th house gemini.

I have had a lot of trouble finding people like myself…and some people I am very close to have actually told me I am too much to handle because I get too intense and have too much emotion pouring out. The person I am dating says that I am rather emotional as well and I constantly trying to figure things out/analyzing myself and everyone around me trying to make things better. I have not been able to channel this energy successfully, so reading this article was very interesting. I have deep needs to express myself so I talk about what I observe and it is not something everyone can handle.

My boyfriend has his pluto in 4th house conjunct mars in scorpio and is an Aquarius sun/moon. We tend to get very volatile and I wonder who is the more plutonian one out of both of us. It often seems as if he has power over me, but I wonder if that is a result of my own insecurities.

Either way, good food for thought!

    1. hi reeti
funny, i also have my moon in the 8th house in gemini as well! yes, over emotional, intense&hard to handle are definitely words that my friends would use to describe me as well.
i enjoy being plutonian though, i hope you do too!!
at least no one will ever be able to pull the wool over our eyes =)

  5. Hi Lori, Good to hear from you!

To be honest, I’ve had troubles with it. My sun, venus and mercury are in 9th house cancer so that with my scorpio planets (pluto on rising, mars and saturn in scorpio) leaves me constantly unsettled. I desire a home and security but also am constantly restless. On top of all these emotions swirling around I have a need to talk about them, and it gets to be too much for people. So my cancer self feels a bit rejected…How did you learn to cope and enjoy yourself? I’m realizing I need to accept and be happy with myself to be happier in general!

  6. hi reeti,
oh wow! talk about an overabundance of water! and that makes perfect sense about the cancer feeling rejected and always wanting to talk about the intense emotions you’re feeling.

well my sun and mercury are in virgo so i’m a bit more earthy with my emotions and thought process. it took mannnny years to get ahold of that innate intensity only you and i woudl understand lol.
coping is difficult in a relationship though. i just got broken up with for being too emotional and negative so i understand your pain (gosh thanks a lot scorpio lol)
i dont necessarily enjoy being so emotionally deep it overwhelms me (u obviously understand that) but i try to focus on the positive side of being scorpionic. i read somewhere that there are 2 types of scorpio risings- 1. is a very crude, jealous, crass, & veangeful and the 2nd is mysterious, proud, alluring, magnetic, sexy…so even though im naturally like the first one lol i TRY to be like the 2nd one haha.

i’ll tell you what though, and i hope you understand this, those obssessive feelings…i still cant break them. do u feel the same?
i mean i constantly need someting/someone to obsess over. and it’s intense. im like a stalker lol!! but right now im addicted to excercise thankfully..next week it may be different. i am 26 years old and i just cant break that deep rooted obsession that comes so easily. ugh.
anyway u ever wanted to live abroad? my moon in 8th is kinda close to my 9th cusp and im obssessed with going abroad so maybe u feel it too hehe
    okay bye =)
    -Lori

  7. Hi Lori,
How funny you’re 26. I turn 26 this month actually. We must have been born around the same time. Are you 1984 born?

I’m only now getting into trying to control my intensity. I moved around a lot when I was younger so didn’t really get a chance to develop my social skills. Now that I am dating and meeting new people I am only too painfully aware of the strong responses I create in people. I’m actually very sensitive so it bothers me alot.

I like how you said that you think of yourself as the 2nd type of scorpio…I think I will try that and see where it takes me. I tend to get so possessive and it just isn’t good. But I guess that is also just who I am. Yes I definitely get obsessive…I get into these routines and I have to do them the right way so it is important to remember to break them up as well.

My sun, mercury, venus are in the 9th house so YES I LOVE to travel and am always thinking where I can go next. I decided to go back to graduate school and I realize that higher learning is also part of the 9th house. But traveling is completely in my blood and I need to get it out of me to feel satisfied in my day to day. Contradictory because as a cancer I have an equal desire to be at home! Ahh!! Drives me crazy all these contradictions…haha…

Are you going to travel somewhere?

    Bye,
    Reeti

  8. Dawn, what happens when you have Pluto aspects natally and the synastry is between someone of a similar age (i.e. the aspects are repeated)? Is the impact exactly the same? Surely you have this relationship with everyone of a similar age? Would it become more important to see if it works both ways e.g. there are Sun-Pluto aspects between each person?

  9. Hi Rose,

Contrary to popular belief, if you share the outer planet positions with someone close in age, you have to pay more attention to the outer planets, not less. It’s the inner planets that we use on a day to day basis and the inner planets that define how we use the energy of the outer planets. You need to examine what role Pluto plays in the other chart, in and of itself. If you have a Sun/Pluto square and are always pushing the boundaries and testing yourself (perhaps through relationship) it will make a big difference if a partner has, say, a Mars/Pluto opposition as opposed to a Venus/Pluto trine. The Venus/Pluto person will be attracted to your intensity. The Mars/Pluto relationship may be problematic, perhaps dangerously so. You can’t look at any aspect in isolation. You would need to see how strong Pluto is in the other chart and what else it’s affecting.

  10. “The person with the heavier Pluto influence tends to have the upper hand in relationships”

w.r.t synastry and the above statement, do you mean someone who is heavily plutonian in their natal chart, has the upper hand ?

or is it that if someone elses Pluto touches my personal planet but they are not heavily plutonian in their natal chart, he has the upper hand?

also in Synastry what is your take on someone’s natal Pluto falling in your 8th house or 12th house?

  11. If a person is under a great deal of Plutonian influence, there are always issues surrounding control and manipulation. Pluto likes to survey the landscape and see where things lie before making a move. They may conceal quite a bit. So in a typical situation, the Plutonian will know what’s what, while you might be quite innocent and/or naive about their tendencies. Conjunctions and squares are more influential than trines or sextiles, which may just appreciate the intensity of the contact. If Pluto is not very influential in a chart, there will be less of a drama surrounding Pluto, but astrological laws still apply, and outer planets influence inner. The inner are then transformed by the contact, and in turn, can cause the outer planet to shift gears. But honestly, you have to look at the whole synastry to really see how any one aspect may play out.

Placing one person’s planet in another person’s houses is impossible to interpret without looking at how the planet operates in the original person’s natal chart. The exceptions are the lights (Sun and Moon), and Saturn. I’ve written a couple of articles on placing planets in houses. You can find them here:

    https://theinnerwheel.com/2009/10/01/synastry-q-a-planets-in-houses/

    https://theinnerwheel.com/2010/07/27/synastry-studies-the-role-of-the-houses/

  12. In my natal chart, I am heavily plutonian altho’ outwardly I appear cool due to an airy asc & sun sign. the other person (acc to their natal chart) is not heavily plutonian, altho’ they appear so due to their sun sign.

However, in synastry, their Pluto in 12th house Pisces, trines my Sun, Mercury, Mars in my 1st house & conjucnts my Pluto in 8th house. Also, my Pluto conjuncts their MC.

My question is just about the one line in your article keeping the above synastry in mind:

“The person with the heavier Pluto influence tends to have the upper hand in relationships”

who would have the upper hand?

I guess me asking this question reveals how plutonian I am. 😛

  13. You are, in fact, revealing your Plutonian ways. Much more than you probably realize. In good relationships, there is an easy flow, and no one person takes control. Plutonians are very uncomfortable with that fact.

There is no way of knowing the dynamics of a relationship without complete analysis of both charts in a synastry. Let’s just say that the Plutonian will try to get the upper hand, and be more anxious to get the upper hand, and that very thing may be your downfall in the relationship. Plutonians need to trust and to learn to let go, so that who gets the upper hand is not so important.

Usually, Pluto conjunct someone else’s MC causes you to want to control their public behaviour, image, and challenge and control their place in their world. What you really need to do is focus on the IC, and connect to their emotional truth and core being. Without this, things may fall apart.

  14. how do you let go when you are heavily plutonian and have an obssesive compulsive pull towards someone that you do not/cannot understand .. it makes no sense. it feels deeper than anything I’ve ever felt before. the fact that it might be over, is difficult to wrap my head/heart around.

I have transit Pluto conjunct my natal Venus opp my natal moon going on .. and when Pluto opp moon, all hell broke loose .. if I’d kept my cool .. things wouldn’t have been like this .. but I just could not bear to do ‘nothing’ .. and when I did ‘something’ .. it ended badly. I feel betrayed .. and the other person who is also at fault & who set off this chain reaction of events .. blames me .. when they’re to blame, if not more so.

I am completely unsettled and feel like Iv been dying for months now .. am I already dead? I hv fits of sudden uncontrollable rage and/or tears. I dont recognize this creature that now occupies what used to be my body .. it’s me .. but it’s not. I can also tell I’m in the middle of it .. the transformation is not complete .. I have no resolution still … in all my intensity .. I’m lost and alone .. “what now?” I wonder to myself.

Is the revelation that we’re not what I thought we were .. the ripping to shreds of the most important relationship in my life a good thing? sounds impossible to believe that this could be a good thing.

To make things worse, I cannot bear the superficiality that surrounds me .. the petty things that people bring up in work, love and life .. it’s impossible to bear .. people are impossible to bear .. they smile those fake smiles .. they give importance to things that are so unbelievably superficial and ignore the core .. it’s like everyone has missed the point of why we’re here .. life seems to be pretty unbearable during a Pluto transit.

When Saturn conjuncts my Pluto next year .. will that finally kill me?

    1. I’m sorry about your situation. Plutonian relations are never easy, and are, in fact, designed to burn us down to our essence, to a place where we cannot be destroyed. Pluto will bulldoze anything that we are clinging to, because clinging to anything makes us vulnerable. Pluto will destroy any falsities or illusions. What you are doing is mourning the death of the old Self, and until a new Self is formed we feel rage, fear, all the dreaded emotions. The aftermath of Pluto is vulnerability and uncertainty, but part of the process is learning to trust that a new Self will rise, a Self more true to your core being.

It sounds to me that there is more going on here than a Pluto transit to Venus/Moon. You may be in a major cycle of change, and need to have a full reading, including progressions, to understand it.

  15. i have 3 planets in virgo in my first house: sun, mercury, pluto; the other person has a stellium in sag – sun, venus, mercury, neptune (my i.c.). i definitely don’t feel as if i have the upper hand, quite the opposite. it feels as if he holds all the cards as to whether the relationship continues.

    1. Hello, Bea. As always, it’s impossible to take individual synastries into consideration. But on the whole, if a person’s Pluto makes aspects to the inner planets of another person, particularly the hard aspects, the Pluto person will make the other person feel as if they are not in control of the situation. Of course, other things can mitigate these circumstances. If his planets fall on your IC, it’s a very powerful contact. First house Plutos, particularly when Pluto is conjunct the ASC, classically put themselves into situations where there are issues about power and manipulation by others. You may be testing your own power by putting yourself in situations where you are vulnerable.

  16. yes, the last time we parted, he told me that while when we were together it felt great, he felt uncomfortable in the idea of being in relationship with me. i suppose his moon/saturn cancer opposition my jupiter/saturn capricorn doesn’t make things any easier. i suppose saying it’s pretty intense would be sort of an understatement. and true, i have never felt this vulnerable to anyone.

  17. I am looking forward for more Pluto articles.. Keep them coming.. love reading your Articles..

I’m going through a Moon/Pluto connection right now, along with alot of other connections…(along with each others Stelliums in the others 12th) Its seriously the most intense thing I have felt in my life.. I actually had to figure out what I was feeling, as it just didnt make any sense..

We dont have the power struggles, but I do feel the blow up coming.. There are those things that “havent” been said, which is completely and totally killing me. …

Plus the Push/Pull to each other is just unexplainable. I desperately want to pull away, but I just cant… ( this is how I feel I have lost control) No matter what I do I cant get away… (note, this relationship ended a year ago) only we are in constant contact with each other. Speaking more now, than we did then…….

We have so many Pluto/Moon aspects, Its just amazing it hasnt burst yet…

    Synastry
    Both way’s Moon sextile Pluto

    Composite
    Moon conjunct Pluto.

My Draconic Pluto conjuncts his Natal Moon
His Natal Pluto conjuncts my Draconic Moon

My DR Moon/Pluto midpoint conjuncts his Natal Moon/pluto midpoint.

What Im really trying to understand is what does Pluto want from Moon.. I understand the transformation part of it.. But I just seem to be missing something… I am at a complete and total loss here.. I feel this person connected to me very deeply….Its very confusing and frustrating..
I try to pull away, but when I do I actually feel miserable, and guilty.. (Im highly uranium) This is very confusing for me, since I never have a problem walking away from anyone…..
I cant not leave this person… This person has to be a part of my life….

    sighhhhh

    1. You’ve answered your own question, Lioness. Pluto is teaching you about the nature of attachments, especially since you describe yourself as a Uranian type who has no problems walking away. Pluto always takes us beyond the habitual, to new and frightening (for us) territory.

  18. Dawn, do Pluto relationships have any positive aspects, positive aspects, are they always about destruction, transformation and endings? Do they take over the nature of a relationship?

I have a relationship in which Pluto figures heaviliy in synastry, both ways, Moon/Pluto, Mars/Pluto double whammies, Venus Pluto from this person to me (he is Venus Sq Pluto and a Scorpio natal), my Sun opp his Pluto, his Saturn touches almost evey planet of mine, and my Venus almost every planet of his, and I feel it to the core and beyond. It confuses me, and it’s made me sit, observe, analyse and explode, just as you describe, steadily, quietly, until I couldn’t hold it any more. There is an enormous amount of affection, connection, goodwill (Jupiter and Neptune), and dependence there, the feeling that life is right when we face it together, and a lot of jealousy, control, manipulation and pain.

I have just made a decisive move to walk away, not because I want to, but because I feel I have to, and I’m wondering if there is a way around this Pluto stuff, the way to clear it, bring it in the open, face it and resolve it, rather than destroy?

    Hopefully yours.
    variete

    1. It’s interesting that Plutonians tend to ‘find’ one another. It’s almost as if they know that they’re bringing things to extremes and they’re looking for partners who can take the heat. It all comes down to whether or not you want to live with this energy pattern on a daily basis, because it doesn’t really transform–Pluto is always testing. You can learn to distance yourself from the confrontations. One of the better relationships I know of has this dynamic–she is a super-Scorpio, with a mass of planets in Scorpio in the 8th; he has an intellectual Aquarian bent, and is good at bracing himself against the Plutonian explosions and the constant digging into the psyche. Aside from that, Earth and Water combos can work where Pluto is heavily involved, because Earth is good at containing Pluto/Scorpio. Fire and Air can get burned by Pluto, but Earth can take it in stride, and Water will eventually find its own level again.

  19. I’ve been looking up about Plutonian relationships and the draconic synastry and came across this site. Natally I have Pluto Rx Virgo with contacts by minor and major aspect to all other planets except Venus, it sits on my SO/MO MP and it is the highest planet in the chart. I am pretty Plutonian, especially with my need to delve and analyse. In the draconic I have Sun in Scorpio too.

People I feel comfortable with also have this Sun in Scorpio in draconic, close by mine, and they are people that it is really possible to cut to the chase with, bare bones exposed with no frippery.

What intrigues me most is the relationship I have with a man who is my friend. There is a lot going on in the synastry anyway, but among the most notable are the Sun and Moon contacts to Pluto both ways. In fact my Moon opposes his Pluto and they sit on his SO/MO MP, so highly Plutonic individually and in synastry. But topping that is the draconic synastry where his Pluto sits straight on top of my Scorpio Sun stellium, and my Pluto squares his Sun. As I said, there are a lot of other interaspects, but this Pluto connection is what interests me. The relationship was immediate and the sexual interest compulsive and intense but remains unconsummated after some 9 years, given prior relationships of long standing. This relationship is the scene of soul searching and analysis and is like life blood. There is no desire for it to end. Occasionally, I wonder if it has anywhere to progress toward, or if this analytic dancing is in perpetual motion and does not need to change.

Where I was coming to though. Yes, there is an element of compulsion but it is like it is under control (Saturn is there too). Does the fact that we have very Plutonian charts natally, along with my very strong Sun stellium explain the fact that this relationship does not stray into the totally obsessional and that I do not feel overwhelmed by all that Pluto? I’m trying to explain this better. Does having a strong chart Pluto not only predispose you to Plutonic types of relationships but also insulate you from the more extreme traits/shocks? For instance, there are times I don’t feel totally in control of the relationship, there are times when just being physically in close in a small space is hypnotic and blanks my mind but this doesn’t really phase me too much, it is as it is. I can imagine that this could be earth-shattering if I was much younger, or not at all Plutonic. But I am assuming that the transformation we bring to each other in every contact is so meaningful that the fear and manipulation are not required. We both have natal Neptune close by the draconic Pluto conjunction so may be it is just an illusion.

    Any thoughts?

    1. Hello, jac. Yes, you’ve hit on something that is key to relationships with a heavy outer planet emphasis, no matter whether it is Pluto, Neptune or Uranus at the helm. If you are a Plutonian type, and well-versed in the ways and limitations of Pluto, you will be okay with the Plutonian vibe of the relationship, particularly as you get older and more familiar with it. This comfort level will be enhanced if the other person is Plutonian as well. Outer planet relationships, if handled with awareness and sensitivity, do not have to go through the petty and mundane dramas that we typically hear about and read about. At some level, Pluto, Neptune and Uranus are asking us to let go of the mundane and replace it with the extraordinary, and if we let go of possessiveness and fear, we can embrace a type of exchange that is unusual, but extremely rewarding. Other people may not understand it, but you will, and that’s all that matters.

  20. This website is great. I love what you write about Pluto. I learned some of its lessons the hard way in a prior relationship (we both had pluto aspects to personal planets) … we both struggled with plutonian issues (he was the silent type that exploded out of nowhere, I was the controlling one) … now I’m entering into a potential relationship with … many, many more pluto contacts than the last one (my pluto op his stellium of personal planets, his sq my mars and sextile ur). God save my soul. (Or his?) Older and wiser?

  21. In a relationship now and his pluto conjuncts my moon and venus, his neptune sextile my venus, n.node sextile moon and n.node his moon conjunct my chiron, venus square neptune, the list goes on. I feel like we belong together like he is my soulmate we have been in this on and off push pull relationship for 5 yrs and it so hard to picture him not being in my life. What puzzles me is I have tried leaving but I cant forget him no one compares the connection we share is so strong but he is so strong and excellent at controlling his emotions he is a scorpio but I also have pluto in scorpio in the 8th house so im pretty strong too but with him I feel hopeless and.weak not like my normal self. Any advice on how to move on or fix if possible.

    1. Hi Dominique. We would really have to look at a complete synastry to see what is really going on between you, including progressions. Unfortunately, we can’t even begin to do that in this space.

None of the aspects you mentioned would make you feel ‘helpless,’ not even Moon conjunct Pluto. ( Honestly, when you’re comparing charts, forget about the trines and sextiles and focus on the conjunctions, oppositions and squares, especially the tightest ones.) But his Pluto conjunct your Moon/Venus speaks to the very essence of yourself as a woman and as a conscious being, and his presence is felt as a deep attraction that is also a threat. There is often an attraction/repulsion factor in Pluto contacts that makes it hard to get away. One of the things you have to ask yourself is why you’re attracted to the control, the power plays, and the possible danger involved. We often confuse feelings of love with something darker, having to do with power, and it often stems from our early upbringing. Perhaps you only allow yourself to surrender in relationship when you are overpowered or overwhelmed. Many questions come up. The Moon/Chiron conjunction brings up questions of healing and emotional dependency which can be extremely erotic.

In order to really understand what is going on you would need a synastry done. With Pluto, it’s always good to hang on to your rationality and examine your motives.

  22. Hi Dawn,

I have vertex conjunct pluto (8th house, in scorpio) do you think this is significant? Would this make all connections to pluto extremely intense/fated?

Also, pluto trines chiron which is right on my I.C and makes up part of a cardinal grand cross. Would pluto contacts also ‘stir up’ any issues I have with this?

    1. Plutonian experiences will help you reveal your truest self–and that can run the gamut from death (or symbolic death) to intimacy. Old, security-based behaviours will not be tolerated. The wisdom and compassion of Chiron will help you to forgive yourself of any past behaviour that stemmed from insecurity; difficult relations in the early life can give you the wisdom to move forward.

  23. Hello,

Great pluto relationships article! I had experience with this intensely karmic and life changing blaster, with my first husband, a venus/pluto relationship, oh boy. I was the Venus person, although I’m a Scorpio…

I’ve had now, many years later, an experience with someone that I have a double* pluto/sun conjuct with (both less than 3 degrees apart) It felt other-wordly. Our personalities just disappeared. Jezz what a ride…

If you can, talk a bit about this double Sun/Pluto aspect… there’s nothing online….

    1. Any double aspect, especially when it’s the same aspect (Pluto con Sun twice, as opposed to one conjunction and one square, for example), magnifies the power of the aspect within the relationship. In this case, with the Sun and Pluto involved in the most intense aspect there can be, both people will ‘die’ to themselves and be reborn due to the relationship. Everything in life will redefine itself, nothing will feel the same ever again. It might be frightening, especially when you realize that you must let go of everything you’ve ever held on to. The purpose is to let go so that you can burn down to who it is you really are at your core level. Some people will run away from this (depending on their attitude to change, and intimacy). It depends on the way Pluto is placed in the natal chart.

    1. It demands change at the deepest level, at the place where our consciousness processes our experience. We’re made to look at the world in a different way, and this relationship will bring that out. There is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ in aspects; the only thing that matters is what we do with them.

  24. I’m living with a friend who has pluto conjunct her merc asc opposite my moon on the IC. I feel like I am living in a private emotional hell and can’t say anything about it. Whenever I bring up how I am experiencing her it is completely dismissed. It’s very unbalanced, my pluto and more masculine planets do not aspect any of her personal planets at all.

I am very receptive in living with her, and I have no way to shut it off. I think pluto needs to reassess it’s audacity to think it has the right to transform another person and worry about itself instead. Maybe instead of telling other people how they are it needs to listen to how it is effecting other people. Its hard because there are a lot of great things about her, but because this effects me very intensely in a negative way emotionally it negates a lot of it.

At any rate, the only way I have found to deal with it is to get my own place as soon as I can and distance myself. It’s unfortunate. So plutonians, take note, some of us may choose to leave you and create physical distance instead of letting you transform us. It’s not because we don’t transform ourselves, because I know I do – but because you don’t have the right to do that to another person.

  25. Pluto is always about power. A Pluto ‘attack’ will always cause us to assess our own strength, which we often need to do. In this way, though it’s difficult for us, Pluto is actually performing a service by making us more aware of what we can and cannot tolerate. And yes, sometimes that means getting out of the Plutonian’s way to create another space. Good luck.

  26. Here´s something about pluto.
I was born with moon conj pluto in virgo 12th cusp
At the age of 4 months my mother took me on a flight from Chicago to Germany to visit her grandparents. I had to be brought to the hospital right away when we got there with a severe case of meningitis, worst type. I was isolated for 7 weeks and the doctor told my mom I would probably not make it, the disease had turned into a sepsis. All of a sudden a healing process began and I recovered 100%.
But then mom went back to Chicago without me and left me back in Germany for over a year.
When pluto began to transit my birth house I was “stuck” with four kids in an unhappy marriage and completely financially dependant on my husband. One night I dreamt I met this man sitting on a throne but he had no face (pluto)
I was strongly attracted to this image. Within a few weeks I ended my marriage and a lot of ugly stuff happened.
Three weeks later I met pluto in person, a rising scorpio guy and the love of my life, we´re still happy together, after 15 years. My life turned 180°, I became a teacher for retarded children and I run our finances and am not the depedant suffering spouse any longer.
Throughout plutos transit through my birth house (3rd sag)
I drew people, neighbors and people who popped into my life who were either manipulative, going through nightmare relationships or had wierd sex expieriences. I also had a sterilization after have being pregnant 8 times in my life.
I had to fulfill my pluto-moon. I didn´t have to die as a baby and I really felt a sense of completeness when I began teaching retarded children.
Pluto brought the greatest gifts to my life.

  27. My sun/pluto conjunction in libra 1. house is building an exact square to sun/moon conjunction of my partner in cancer 2. house and my moon in capricorn 4. house has also an close opposition to his sun/moon inconjunction. Despite this very challenging aspects in synastry we have deep feelings for each other. Sometimes my partner complains about perception being dominated by me and I find him at times too tenacious and stubborn, unwillingly to implement my ideas, facing them in pessimistic way. But in the end I get what I want and it is always for his best 😉

  28. PS: I feel I found a soulmate with him, I think our connection is karmic, it`s like I we were bounded in former lifes. Sometimes there is some sense of dissolving of my ego in him, like our souls are blending. Very strange feeling, I think it`s due to pluto`s energies…

    1. That dissolving feeling is usually not Pluto, but Neptune or Pisces. You have to look at the whole chart. The Plutonian energy is more of a passionate surrender, not a dissolve. A subtle but clear difference.

  29. we do not have any Neptune aspects between our charts. I think it’s Pluto, the kind of dissolving is like a possession, he became a part of me/my spirit, he is like an extension of myself, my opinions and my way of life became his way of life..

  30. this man i know has venus square pluto in his chart.
i have mars square pluto in my chart.
In addition my pluto is trine his moon.
and his pluto is in opposition to my moon and square my sun
Also his venus is in opposition to my sun by half a degree. and his mercury is in exact opposition to my mars. i would say that our relationship is very plutonian in nature. his pluto is also conjunct his saturn and mars. i’m to visit him soon and i’m worried about our long term compatibility, we do have my mercury and venus conjunct his moon, and i have 3 planets in his 7th house, but do you think that getting along with him will always be a struggle? we had a pretty big fight, even though we made up, last time i visted him, we also have his mars in opposition to my moon. and i’m just worried about a repeat. i feel our relationship is quietly very intense, but other people don’t seem to see it. i’m scared now that i have delved into this pluto stuff and understand it better.

  31. I have a stellium (Su-Me-Ma in Virgo, Pluto in Libra) conjunct former boyfrend’s Pluto ( it was sitting on my Sun), and I had a feeling that I lost my will. I was completely dissolved in him. I know someone with the same aspect to my Sun, but my Pluto also squares his Sun. Would it change the situation?

    1. Having the square would change the situation somewhat–it would make it more of an active power struggle. The greater question is why the Plutonian encounters? A message is trying to get through to you about uses and abuses of personal power, and you should try and pay attention to that.

  32. I have been thinking about it as well. It seems that I have strong karmic connections with both these men, besides the Pluto-Sun aspects. Perhaps some past life lessons about use/abuse of personal power, like you said. I also have a fear that I would be dissolved in the other person and then abused, when I least expect it. It feels very uncomfortable to even think about a possible relationship because of that. Compared to Saturn(which I’ve had enough due to its square to my stellium), Plutonian kind of abuse sounds absolutely unbearable. Are there any other keys which I can use to solve this puzzle?

    1. I think you have hit the astrological wall where you either need to consult a professional or study more. There comes a time in astrology where there are no more simple answers and only analysis and synthesis will do. The key is usually not in the synastry, but in deeper analysis of the natal charts themselves.

  33. I guess you are right, I will think about it.
By the way, do you know a good book about Pluto at different levels of soul development?

  34. Greetings Dawn…Kudos to such a soulful site you are full of spiritual wisdom, your words are a great inspiration and flow from a higher power indeed…I found you about a year ago much like others searching for answers to the greater meaning of life through personal transcendence and intimate relationships…Your words acted upon me like a warm soothing blanket during what was the darkest, scariest and most intense time of my life…Natally, Libra Sun, Gem Rising and Aries Moon…lots of Yang energy here and I have been told by many I am a very strong woman…However, I have Pluto Conjunct Venus, Pluto Square Ascendent, Uranus Conjunct Venus and Saturn touches everything in my chart except my Sun…Natally.
My Progressed chart states that my Sun, Venus and Merc are all in Scorpio now…In addition I am currently undergoing, the past 2 years a Pluto Square/Uranus Opposition to my Natal Sun transit….whew, seeing this on paper makes me shudder…
I am a 46 year old Pagan female in a same sex partnership the past 5 years…Oddly enough her Pluto and Uranus Conjuncts my Venus plus her Pluto Squares my Ascendent (a mirror image of my Natal) and her Pluto Inconjuncts my Moon …you talk about being dropped into the middle of Guerilla warfare, my psyche’s splayed out, all my landmarks and defense mechanisms gone with nothing to guide me home… but I did and I continue to fight Pluto again and again…
Natally, She is a Gem Sun, Libra Rising and Scorp Moon. Her Pluto and Uranus Squares her Sun, Pluto Semi Sextiles her Ascendent …My Pluto Squares her Sun, Sextiles her Merc, Semi Sextiles her Ascendent and Mars, Plus my Uranus Squares her Sun….again our synastry is almost a mirror image to her Nata like hers to minel…I can’t help but think some greater force has forged us together…Pluto likes Pluto…I have done so much healing in the last 2 years I am not at all the same person…I feel like I walked through the bowels of Hades but I came back with blessed gifts…I learned one of the most precious gifts…Unconditional Love for myself and for her…I have never felt this way for anyone…I feel one of my gifts to Humanity is healing and guiding/teaching others by example (my Life Path number is the very spiritual loner #7) I also gained immense clearsightedness and and can sense and feel things acutely…I can pick up Pluto energy from others, strangers whomever like a puppy smells its Kibbles blocks away…and I would not change anything I went through…
I do have two questions…I am aware you cannot always answers things without seeing the charts but she is not one for words and keeps things within…I know what I feel and felt and wonder if she feels the same intensity/transformation as I did/do with my Pluto aspecting her chart. I believe so as she has never stayed this long with anyone and has stated early on that she has found her soulmate…Second question how does my Pluto Semi Sextile her Mars and her Ascendent work…they are both exact…Thankyou for listening…Blessings to you and yours…

    1. I’m afraid I can’t answer a questions as general, and as important, as whether or not your partner feels the same intensity for you that you do for her. My instinct tells me that if you have to ask, you need to communicate better with one another. With Pluto, if it is strong, you should know. You would not be afraid to strip one another down, emotionally, even if you do not speak. Pluto helps us work through blockages to get to the pure expression of soul within. When Pluto is dominant in a synastry, there are always blocks to work through and break down. You need to be honest with one another, even if she is not good with words, you need to know. But then, of course, Pluto is never satisfied. Maybe you do know, but are looking for reassurance, which is also typical of Pluto.

On the other hand, it is never good to attribute too much energy to one planet, even Pluto. We are an expression of everything in the chart. Other planets will have their say. Listen to them.

  35. I love your articles and am glad that I discovered this site. You seem to have a fresher perspective on astrology than some of the other sites I get information from. I was hesitant to pose a question since this article was written awhile ago but then I saw that you have been continuing to answer posts on this topic.

I have recently met someone who is open minded to astrology and metaphysics and we have sort of clicked. I was able to get his birth info. I am able to find a good many interpretations, but it’s difficult when you have multiple planet conjunctions in certain house to find any decent interpretation… I’m not very good at blending energies, yet.

We have some really nice synastric aspects. His Sun (11′) is conjunct his ASC (4′), Venus (6′) and Neptune (4′) in Capricorn with Cancer on the DSC. I am a 12th house Gemini (19′) with a Cancer ASC (9′), Capricorn DSC, Moon in Capricorn (25′) in the 7th house. His Venus (6′) and my Mars in Virgo (3′) are in a tight trine, His Sun is trine my Pluto in Virgo (9′). His Venus is in a tight oppos to my ASC. My Venus falls in his 4th house. His Sun is in my 7th house conj my DSC. My moon is in his 1st house.

My Uranus/Mars/Pluto at 1′, 3′ and 9′ in Virgo in the 3rd conj his Moon in Virgo (10′) in the 8th. He also has a Mars/Pluto conj in Scorpio at 11′ and 6′ in the 9th. My Mars is square his Saturn in Sag (5′). I’m not sure that these aspects are helpful.

That’s not the whole chart – just the highlights. Even our chart rulers and leading planets are in mutual reception. We both have intercepted houses and duplicated houses that mirror each other in a certain ways.

Here’s where it is worrisome to me: My Uranus/Mars/Pluto conj in Virgo falls into his 8th house. His Mar/Pluto conj in Scorpio falls into my 5th and conjoins my Neptune Rx. I have read that Mars/Pluto in tight aspect in a synastric chart can be cause for an abusive relationship to form. But I also read in this forum that if the planets are in compatible elements, then the energy is easier to handle. I am hoping that because the planets in question are sextile to each other, that won’t be the case. I’m also hoping that we have enough helpful/balancing aspects that they can be used to tone down some of the intensity this energy might produce. I’m hoping there is enough information there for you to be able to offer some advice. Can you tell me how this energy is likely to play out?

    1. I don’t set much store by putting one person’s planets in the other person’s houses (unless they’re on angles or in cardinal houses) and even less when planets, even the so-called bad guys like Mars and Pluto, make soft aspects to one another. Aspects trump everything, and the hard aspects are the ones you’re really going to feel.

  36. hello Dawn. I love reading all your articles, especially those about pluto. I’m Leo sun, i have pluto conjunct (through 12th house) ASC in libra and i’m a plutonian type.
It’s the second time i’m writing as I have transit Pluto opposite my natal Venus and six months ago I met pluto in person, a rising scorpio guy, also Leo sun, neptune cong. his asc.
My pluto squares his mars and his venus.
In addition his pluto sextile my venus.
The relationship was immediate and the sexual interest compulsive and intense, but from the first time i try to distance myself feeling that it’s the only way to deal with it (the jealousy, the possessiveness, or the fear for closeness – venus /uranus1st H square in natal).
Being the pluto person in my previous relationships, i used to have the upper hand. This time i’m not so sure who is being affected the most.

  37. Hello Dawn

Thank you for your beautiful astrological studies.

How significant can it be if one person’s pluto/northnode conjunction in the 12th house hits another’s sun/MC conjunction ? With his pluto uranus also at a 5 deg distance from MC.

Also, in synastry, is venus/pluto trine stronger than sun/pluto conjunction in effect ?

    1. All angle/planet, Node/planet contacts are deeply significant. North Node contacts pull us forward, South Node contacts bring awareness of our past.

There is no trine stronger than a conjunction. Ever.

  38. Good evening,
Such a beautiful article about Pluto…
I’ve got Eros/Psyché/Vertex/Neptune, all four conjunct tight in Scorpio V
Well well… I won’t describe in details, but I can say I feel Pluto , and I feel it from body to soul, and from soul to body, believe me…
It’s just like Hell is never far from Heaven, and Heaven never very far from Hell .

  39. Oh I’m sorry, I guess I expressed myself badly, I meant: “in my natal theme !”. I’ve got all these natal points, in my natal scorpio, natal house V. These points being in Scorpio, they are under the influence of Pluto, aren’t they ?That’s what I meant.
I think it is probably why I’m attracted with men with a strong Pluto. My husband has Mars in scorpio, and it conjuncts three of these four points of mine in Scorpio. There is also another person whom I admire a lot who conjuncts them all….

  40. Hello,
    and congratulations for your article!

I have a synastry with someone with an exact conjuction Pluto / Moon in Virgo . I am Pluto and he is moon. We also have Venus (he) trine Pluto (me). The emotions are very intense , at least for me. I think and for him it’s too.
I wonder who has the upper hand in the relationship and who is more obsessed ?

I have a Scorpio ascendant and Pluto opposition Sun / Mercury. He has conjuction Pluto Mars and also Pluto make combinations with the outer planets and with his ruler Uranus.

Who is more plutonium guy? Who suffers much more in this relationship? which probably has no future , but it is very intense.
    Thanks a lot!

  41. Dear Dawn ,

I really enjoy your website and style of your writings , very informative. I’m glad I found you through Ruby slipper website. I don’t consider myself as an astrologer but rather curious/passionate avid reader of the subject for over 20 years. Having mercury rx 10 degree conjunction Neptune same degree in Scorpio in 9th house. Sextile Pluto 8 virgo in dark side of the 8th in 7th house.
My nn is 13 virgo cusp of 8th trine Saturn 14 capricorn in 12 house Ac Aquarius Uranus in 25 leo conjunction moon in 7th.

I would like to share my story and reflect your opinion in particular this article. When someone in natal chart has a soft/no aspects with Pluto and personal planet with someone with hard aspects of pluto in their natal chart then they meet in synastry. How one can help the other to resolve the lesson? I have wide different sign moon conjunction Pluto in 7th meet someone with moon 8 degree Pisces 2nd house.
they have pluto 12 degree Virgo.
Pluto apparently very important in my life development as it conjunctio my nn in progressed chart at 8 degree.

Here is my experience with this conjunction throughout my life has been struggle . I’m learning to no matter what i do. It has something related to stepping on the comfort zone to achieve my goal even when I achieve it. Although I’m a Scorpio Sun and appear to be Pluto-ic I’m very Pisces like. Psychologically I have been in 12th house for some time in progress chart Capricorn and appreciate the Saturn lessons.
Pluto conjunction nn in natal tells me do it or die so to speak or else will meet you in the next life. Having Saturn trine from 12th house applauding to go for it while Neptune deceiving in a poetic way.
With Pluto hard transits like conjunction I found it harder when you don’t have natal aspects. When nothing happens and passes by seem like I already know that lesson and I can deal with it even middle of the turmoil.
I apologize if wrote so much and been using my cell therefore can’t edit , look forward to read your next articles
    peace
    Tania

  42. I have a question about a stellium square pluto. The stellium is 12th/1st house cusp (sun, asc, moon , mars conj in Leo) prettily tightly squared pluto in scorpio. Would this make me a plutonian personality? I’ve always been intrigued by plutonian issues. Also, any suggestions on how to cope with my self destructive personality??:)

    1. Yes, this makes you Plutonian, because of the houses and planets involved and Pluto in Scorpio. There are entire books written about Pluto and I would be irresponsible to comment on your personality in this space. The entire chart has to be taken into consideration.

  43. I have questions about the Pluto synastry between me and my new boyfriend. The closest synastry aspect we have is my Pluto opposite his Sun with an orb of 0:07. His Pluto trines my Moon with an orb of 01:02; conjuncts my Mars and Mercury with an orb of less than 2; and sextiles my Venus with an orb of 02:19. We’re both Plutonian, but I’m quite a bit more than him:

Me: Sun conjunct Pluto; Pluto trine Saturn and Ascendant; Pluto sextile Neptune and Midheavan; Venus, Jupiter, Neptune and Midheaven in Scorpio; Sun, Pluto, and Uranus stellium in the 8th house.

My boyfriend: Pluto trine Moon and Venus; Pluto conjunct Uranus; Pluto sextile Neptune; Neptune is in his 8th house ruled by Scorpio.

We’ve only been dating for a month, but everything feels so right. Your article mentions that an imbalance in Pluto synsastry can be a bad thing. His Pluto aspects four of my planets while my Pluto aspects only one of his. Considering how extremely Plutonian I am and that my Pluto opposed to his Sun is our closest aspect (Moon conjunct Moon with an orb of 00:13 is next closest), would you say that evens out the aspects his Pluto makes to my Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars?

This hasn’t been a hot, passionate relationship. It’s more pleasant than that and much deeper, like a slow burn intensifying with each passing day instead of a hot flash that quickly burns out. I’m not all OCD about him like I have been about other men I’ve liked, yet I think about him all the time and miss him when he’s not here. I’ve never experienced anything like it!

    1. Without going into too much detail, it does sound as if his soft aspects to your Pluto will mitigate your harder ones. Pluto and power will still be an issue, however. You will have to look at the composite chart.

  44. Thanks Dawn! I did a composite chart and Pluto aspects almost everything except Venus and Saturn:
Pluto squares Sun, Mercury, Mars, and Midheaven; trines Moon and Jupiter; conjuncts Uranus; sextiles Neptune; opposes Chiron;sesquiquadrates north node.

I don’t know, but it looks a little scary to me…

  45. Hi Dawn,

What would you say about a Venus/Mars midpoint conjunct someone’s Pluto. The midpoint person is a Scorpio (with Venus in Scorpio) who also has Scorpio/Taurus nodes. The Pluto person has a Scorpio asc.

    Thanks,
    Christine

    1. I think it’s obvious that there would be some kind of excitement of the Plutonian kind, particularly for the midpoint person. It may not affect the Pluto person at all.

  46. Hi Dawn,

Me and my daughter seem to have strong Sun-Moon-Pluto interaspects / contacts. Below are the key aspects :
    Sun (Daughter) – conjunct – Moon (Father)….orb 2 degrees
    Moon (Daughter) – conjunct – Pluto (Father)…..orb 1 degree
    Pluto (Daughter) – conjunct – Sun (Father)….orb 2 degrees

What should I make out of these contacts. Are these strongly Karmic

    Thanks
    Viv

    1. Interpretation depends entirely on the position and condition of Pluto in the natal chart. All else is speculation. Pluto is not necessarily any more karmic than another planet.

  47. In synastry if Pluto aspect to all personal planets…like sun, moon, mercury and mars…. sun square Pluto(sun 12 degree Leo square Pluto scorpio 1 degree) ,moon conjunct Pluto(moon 3 degree scorpio conjunct Pluto Scorpio 1 degree), mercury square Pluto (mercury 24 degree cancer square Pluto scorpio 1 degree), and mars opposite Pluto( mars 24 degree Aries opposite Pluto scorpio 1 degree) plus his mars is conjunct my moon and his Chiron btw…I am Pluto he is personal planet…. who is more obsessed here…. me….. or him…????…I don’t want it one sided…plz help….. thanks in advance….

  48. Hello Dawn,

I have Descendant/Northnode conjunction in late Capricorn(19-22) with another person’s Sun in Capricorn around that degree(24).

He also has North node in Cancer but in early degrees( 4 ). Will the node/angle dynamic apply in this case? Like is it something that evolves over time ..even though there is no direct conjunction?

    thanks.

I feel the node polarity very strongly.
Our NN rulers are also conjunct, my Saturn conjunct his Moon in aquarius.

    thank you

    1. You’re talking about some very strong aspects. Sun to North Node is particularly magnetic. With the Nodes, it’s hard to tell which way things will go as far as length of the relationship. But the fact that the two nodal rulers are conjunct is significant. I couldn’t comment further without seeing the synastry.

  49. What if a person’s pluto in scorpio conjuncts the other persons north node?

What is exactly is going to be transformed here? and does it make it worse if pluto is in scorpio too?

  50. Hello, I’am so new to this and I really need someone to explain to me what is going on with me and this guy we have pluto trine venus and venus conjuct mars and he is the pluto one and the mars one and I’m the venus one in both cases, at first he seemed interested and now he is only playing some psychological games as you mentionned and I’m plutonian myself but I’ve been there done that and I don”t like how things are going, it seems to me that he always bursts when I least expect it here is our full synastry chart would you please give me some insights. thankyou a loot!!

    Mercury Sextile Sun 1.03 177
    Mercury Square Pluto 2.10 -79
    Venus Conjunction Mars 0.55 161

  51. Hi Dawn, I’m trying to find information on how to deal with a Plutonian baby/toddler. My nephew is 17 months old with Pluto 0°31′ conjunct his ascendent in 1st house with the cusp in Capricorn. His pluto is opposite his Venus in Cancer in the 7th house. He also has the moon and mars in scorpio in the 10th. Plus urunaus in aries in the 4th house square pluto. I’m looking for ways to help him channel his energy but also on how to deal with his agressiveness. It’s really hard for me and I can get very mad at him. I have Pluto in the 1st in Libra, opposite both Venus and Mars in the 7th in Aries. I’m not sure how Plutonian I am, I know he is and that he gets to my nerves. But at the same time he is just a baby and what I feel breaks my heart.

    1. Hi Selva. I’m afraid I can’t really comment on this, especially in the case of the chart of a small child. Each piece of this puzzle has to be broken down into components, and there must be mitigating factors in the chart. He will, as he gets older, have to learn to deal with this Plutonian torrent. He probably does annoy you greatly because of your own projected attitudes towards Pluto. If you have Pluto in the first and you aren’t sure how Plutonian you are, well, trust me, you are, and other people see it and feel it in you. Don’t turn your relationship with this child into a battle of wills.

Try to have sympathy and think of how frustrating it is for this little one to carry all that Plutonian energy. He’s frustrated because he’s a baby and he’s learning how to do everything for the first time. Plutonians don’t like being frustrated. They also expect the world to bend to their wills; learning it doesn’t is a long, painful lesson. The best thing to do is take the Taurean/Venusian route–correct, but don’t manipulate, and just let it be. Venus wins. Love and acceptance will usually work better than anger and attempts to control. He’s too young to understand explanations, but not too young to understand love and acceptance. Also, remember that children don’t really know the difference between right and wrong until they’re about seven. Until then, they only see the world from their own point of view, they don’t see themselves as individuals within a social context. So breathe deeply and pray for patience. I wish you luck.

  52. Hi Dawn, thanks a lot for your prompt response. I appreciate it very much. Yes, this Pluto aspect and its influence is something I “discovered” very recently. It was hidden from me. But now I am trying to work with its energy. You must be right about me projecting it on my nephew. Seeing it in him adds another layer to this discovery. I do have my sun in Taurus, so I think I can definitely connect with that Venus route and be loving and compassionate with him. I’m sure, he is also in my life to teach me, so I will open myself up to this learning experience. Thanks again. This was a very much needed conversation. All the best.

  53. Hi, I’m glad I came across this. In composite with someone we have a love stellium in the 5H Leo and all planets are sextile Pluto in 7H Libra. What is this energy like? BTW the love stellium includes Saturn Ugh! It’s a constant push pull, matter of timing and intensity and fear

    1. You may have a ‘love’ stellium in the composite fifth, but remember that the fifth house is about short term relationships, not long term ones. With a sextile to Pluto in the seventh, I think there would be difficulty in establishing the relationship as something more. There may be power issues between you, or a lack of complete truth.

  54. I am so glad I found your article. I ended a relationship not too long ago and have had the hardest time letting go. I ran a synastry chart for us, turns out we have Pluto aspects on every planet except Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. I natally have Mars square Pluto, his Pluto squares his Uranus.

To say this relationship almost destroyed me is an understatement. Either way, we were both permanently transformed. Even though we have gone our separate ways, neither one of us is the same as before 🙁

  55. Hi Dawn,
I had written before about my nephew. Everything is working much better with him now. It helped a lot to try to understand and be compassionate with his frustration with all that plutonian energy, as you put it. Thanks a lot for your advice.
I’m back to inquire about my case. I have Pluto in Libra in the first house at 11°58’ opposing Venus at 9°53’ in 7H in Aries. I have my ascendant node in Libra at 24°15’. I would like to know if this Pluto aspect is what is making it so hard for me to find a compatible, long term partner. I’ve had many relationships, but all the men I attract, find, or that come my way are just not compatible with me. There is always some aspect of the relationship that is non-negotiable. When I find a lot of mental or spiritual connection, the sex doesn’t work, or when there is good physical chemistry, then ideologically or in terms of values we can’t agree. That is the story of my romantic life. My longest relationship lasted 4 years. For the past, 5 years I’ve been in and out of 1-year or less relationships. At this point I’m not desperate anymore as I was in my late twenties/early thirties. Now, I’m just wondering and trying to figure out what it is in me that creates this reality. As you know only recently did I find out about my Plutonian character. I was not aware of the meaning of Pluto in my first house, or its contact with Venus. Now that I know, I’ve come to realization that all my relationships are and will be Plutonian no matter who I meet… because it is in me. So I would like to be able to learn how to, I don’t even know what word to use, how to handle? Accept? Express? This plutonian energy that I carry in order to be able to build a long lasting romantic relationship. Any input you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

  56. Dear Dawn, I had some plutonian relationships in the past, and these relationships were enough intense, so I know something about pluto connections. My 7th.house in Aquarius and Uranus in scorpion (Saturn in Leo) so I need the stable and deep relationship. My loved partner has a Scorpion ascendant and Capricorn sun so he perfect for me. I have a Leo ascendant (his Leo moon in conjunction with my Asc and Saturn). His pluto (chart ruler) is in exact opposition with my sun. And as I saw him (first time in a picture) I knew that he is my Fate. There is an unspeakable intense and deep magnetic attraction between us, that we never felt before. I feel that getting stronger that I can not be if he is not around me for a long time. He is like the air for me. And I never felt before in my past plutonian relationships. But there were never plutonian the connection between chart rulers.
We have a strong and good synastry (for example saturn-moon and moon-asc conjunction, moon-venus in harmony double whammy, venus sextile sun and moon, etc.) and his pluto (asc. ruler) also conjuncts my North Node (and as I mentioned opposites my asc.ruler sun)
In my experience the pluto person more depends on the other and be fond of the other. For me it works in this way in the past in my life. According You the pluto person is the more depended and adhered of the other? I feel our connection the deepest and strongest in my life and for me eventual. I feel as “he is under my skin” also if we are not close to each other. The Pluto person feel the same, or more strong? Thank You in advance for your answer, best wishes.

  57. Dear Dawn! Thank You for your answer. In my past plutonian relations it worked this way that the pluto person was the more attracted. Thanks for God, our synastry is harmonius and strong next to the pluto also. But the pluto is his asc. ruler and the sun is mine asc. ruler, so I thought it makes more singnificant this pluto-sun connection. And his pluto also conjunct my NN. We have also sun-moon midpoint conjunct venus, and our moons are in harmony. I have never felt this kind of certainity and fulness in my life. Best wishes!

  58. Hello, I have also a plutonian question: in our synastry with my BF we have sun conjunct pluto and pluto opposite sun (DW) and pluto conjunt mars. If there is double whammy and the aspects are exact and strong is the attraction mutual strong and intense and the two person equally insist to each other?
I feel that pluto is a very deep and strong bond between us.

  59. Hi Dawn, I met a guy whose Pluto in Virgo 28°33’ in synastry conjunct my ascendant 0°19 in Libra which means that his Pluto also squares the cusp of my 4th at 0°17’in Capricorn and my moon at 2°25’ in Capricorn. I am going nuts about him and I have no idea how he feels about me (which is, I think, what is driving me crazier). I have Pluto in the 1st house 11°58’ opposite my venus and mars in Aries in the 7th plus my sun and mercury in the 8th, so I am plutonic but I don’t see it clearly. He is very plutonic: sun, mercury, jupiter, venus and neptune in Scorpio, mars in libra. He works as a psychologist at a prison and has had very deep transformational experiences so I’m guessing maybe Pluto is in his 12th house? If this was the case, maybe my Pluto is also conjunct his ascendant, but I really don’t know that as I don’t have his time of birth. He reminds me of my very first boyfriend for whom I went crazy about and even today 22 years later he has a lot of power over me. A life-altering experience as you mention as I was very young. So I’ve discovered that the old boyfriend also has his Pluto conjunct my ascendant. And this really feels like I am repeating the experience. I saw the new guy three days ago and since then I haven’t been able to stop thinking about him. There is great chemistry, amazing conversations, a lot of fun. BUT I can’t read him… I don’t know if he is just intrigued by me, if he is interested, or if he is attracted. We have had two great dates (3 weeks apart) where I’ve felt that he is going to kiss me and he doesn’t. Then he disappears. No texts, no calls, no emails, no nothing!!! And that drives me nuts!!! The next day after the first date, I woke up thinking about him and then I spent the next week obsessing about him until I realized that he was not going to call again. Then, after 3 weeks, he asked me out again. My first instinct is to be super straightforward but since I can’t read him I don’t feel I am on safe ground so I withdraw, I contain myself and try to give the impression of coolness and aloofness. I do that by not calling, texting, or emailing either. But when I am in front of him I know that my body language and everything in me says “I’m crazy about you” and he knows it. Should I walk away from this person? He is not giving me much in terms of showing me he is interested… I don’t know what to do. I must mention that he just got out of an 8-year relationship… but that might not be enough to explain that he doesn’t call? And he clearly is not obsessed with me because otherwise he would be calling me, right? My main and most important question is: do I need this experience (again) or should I walk away (if I am able to)? Will walking away mean “leaving to fight Pluto another day”?

  60. Hello Dawn, Yes, it is a very deep and close connection. Both of us need the depth in emotional and sexual levels also. I saw several relationship with plutonic connections (many times pluto-sun and/or pluto-mars conjunctions) those are long term (without Saturn). I guess the strong Pluto connections can result deep insist also between two person.

  61. Thanks for replying, Dawn. I really appreciate this space and I´ve learned a lot through reading everyone´s comments and your responses. I don´t have his birth time, so I will have to wait on the synastry. In the meantime, I have decided to open myself up to the experience and the transformation even if it implies a death and rebirth. Very scary but I also keep getting this Pluto people in my life so I will not avoid or resist it. I guess this is a testing of my own power since I have Pluto in the first. I have one last question: In order to let Pluto do what it wants to do in me, what would be the least painful way? To give away power and let the other person call the shots without resisting it and without trying to have things go my way?

  62. Hi! How does Pluto work in a composite? Who has upperhand? My love and I have our composite Pluto conjunct Sun, Mercury and Venus. Is this karmic? The only Saturn we have is sextile Mars and a square to Jupiter but with an orb of 7-degrees, so don’t know if that counts. No conjunctions to nodes in syn or composite, but composite has trines to n node and sextile to s node. I read saturn indicates karma more than pluto, but I don’t think I buy that. My venus his s node are in the same sign and vice versa for his venus and my south node, but they don’t aspect each other because the orbs are too wide. Does any of this point to karma?

    1. Tiffany, the question of karma between two charts is a complicated one. You can’t assign it to one planet or one position. Usually, I first look to nodal contacts, particularly to the South Node. Pluto between charts indicates power issues; in a composite chart it indicates where the couple must be transformed, regenerated in some way.

    2. The outer planets are oddly simplified in composite charts. Pluto stands for transformation, deep change and an opening of consciousness. (This can be painful, but with Pluto it is often inevitable.) With Pluto conjunct the composite Sun (which stands for the ‘I’ of the relationship, and Mercury and Venus (Mind and Heart) it is destined that two people will be utterly transformed by the relationship for as long as it lasts. No more, no less.

  63. What would you say about Pluto conjunct IC in dynasty? Does it only effect the IC person or Pluto feels drawn in as well

  64. I’ve recently met a man who I’m nothing short of obsessed with. And I literally feel like it’s more or less out of my control. He is a Scorpio Mars/Mercury/Uranus, Libra Sun and Cancer Moon. His Cancer Moon is Conjunct my Asc/Sun/Mars in my 1st, his Pluto is Square my Moon (I have a natal Pluto Moon Square), and Mars. His Mars and Uranus in Scorpio is Conjunct my Vertex in Scorpio. My Pluto is Conjunct his Mercury. I literally feel like I met him for a reason. I’m not sure why, but I feel intensely for him and literally just met. He’s about to get married in two months, and I have a serious bf (who just bought a ring). I also feel like he really doesn’t passionately love his partner (a Cancer Moon with Leo Venus and Scorpio Mars should love passionately and hard). His reasoning for why they are getting married (after I asked him how did he know if she was the one…in which he strongly stated the one doesn’t exist) is because they had been together long enough and get along.

We have a lot of affinities. He is a Libra Sun Conjunct Saturn with Cancer Moon, I’m a Cancer Sun with Cap Moon in the 7th Trine Venus. He’s a Leo Venus Square Uranus, I’m a Taurus Venus in the 11th house, I have a Leo Mercury Square Pluto, he is a Scorpio Mercury, I am a Cancer Mars Inconjunct Uranus and Jupiter, he is a Scorpio Mars Conjunct Uranus.

  65. Great article! very helpful!! thank you.
My poor Moon in Virgo exact conjunct his Pluto/Uranus conjunction in 5th house. His Pluto Uranus conjunction is also in his natal 5th house.I can feel this person so strong i felt in love instantly he hypnotizes me..the problem is that we can’t be together because he is not alone.. i didn’t know that when i met him..so i decide not to contact him and i will continue doing it..is just so hard cause i can’t forget him..and is so difficult for me to imagine anyone else in my life.. Pluto is truly the killer..

  66. hi, i need some advice… i have this friend, but its not like a friendship. as soon as we met, we kissed. and at that moment, it seemed like we were dating, crazy connection… but after that, we made some mistakes and hurt each other a lot, unconsciously. this has already been a year and we continue “together” and doing all this stuff. sometimes i think that maybe is more like a pleasure being hurt… or make him feel hurt by me… i never understood that.
there’s some kind of glue, we tried several times to get away from this relationship, but at the same time, the decision never lasts.
he even traveled to live far away, but he came back this week. and now… everything is confused.

looking at our synastry, we have pluto (i’m the pluto person) opposite mars, pluto (he being the pluto person) square venus and mercury.
also, on the compposite we have venus opposite pluto.

we’re both plutonian, in my case, i have pluto square my sun and moon, pluto in the 7th house (scorpio house) and he has pluto opposite mars.

beside this aspects, i think this glue is caused by our saturn in synastry. his saturn is conjuncting my sun and opposite my moon and my saturn is squaring his sun.
we love each other, its very visible, but never know how to express our feelings, all mixed with the love-hate sensations… aaall the time.

i never thought i would be stuck on this kind of thing in my life.
now that i know these aspects…
what you think i should do about? keep this situation or what can i do to get out and keep me away from him without him losing his control?

  67. Hey Dawn,

I was in a confused place until I found this article. Natally, I would say i’m pretty plutonian. I have Venus in Scorpio conjunct Jupiter, Pluto conjunct Descendant, and North North Node in Scorpio conjunct Jupiter. I don’t feel very plutonian. I am able to catch psychological patterns in others quite easily.. but I also have pallas conjunct my ascendant. I am very introspective and ut’s difficult for me to do psychological harm to others because I would be ridden with guilt if I knew I was intentionally hurting someone. I also have mars in cancer opposite neptune so this can make me extremely passive in my dealings with others.

At the same time, Persephone is conjunct my ascendant and I have been attracting plutonian men/women since my first realtionship. I’m a little confused about my most revent ex because though she doesn’t have many pluto contacts (Her pluto is trine moon and conjunct north node). we are in a very plutonian relationship. Her Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Marss fall into ly 8th house and we have our conposite pluto conjuct our sun, mercury, and venus in scorpio. Our composite mars in libra is sittting in the 8th house.

We both have neptune moons and tend to view ourselves as victms much of the time. Natally, she has a sag stellium including sun, mercury, venus, with cap mars in first. I have a scorpio stellium including venus, jupiter, and north node in 6th including mercury in libra.

I feel intense attraction but i also feel control, mind games, and manipulation. I take the blame for a lot of things and apologize for things that aren’t always mh fault to keep the peace and avoid abandonment. But I notice that she just withdraws and grows distant if I do something she doesn’t like. It’s a really painful but addictive chemistry that we share. And I am honestly just looking for some truth. Even if I turn out to be the pluto person in this case, I just want to know why this bond is so rocky.

I would love to hear what you think xxx

  68. i need some advice… i’m stuck in a friendship (which is not really a friendship, because since we met, was with the date purpose and we were together at the beginning).
and we cannot stay way from one another, even if this person is living on the other side of the country.

all this situation keep hurting me, over 1 year ago and I’ve decided to stay away when I saw the pluto aspects in synastry.
but when i’m doing this, he keeps coming back and looking for me, this cycle never has an end. we fight, we tease, never say the feelings and never give up the relationship and i don’t know why.

    these are the aspects:
his saturn conjunct my sun, venus and mercury
his pluto square my venus and mercury
    my pluto square his mars
my pluto opposite his venus (not exactly, pluto in sagittarius and venus between taurus and gemini)
    my pluto square his saturn
my saturn square his sun and moon
    his mars opposite my sun
    his mars conjunct my moon

i don’t now what to do to resolve this situation.
can you give me a light and explain this?

    also our composite:
sun in taurus opposite moon in scorpio (north node conjunct sun and south node conj the moon)
    jupiter conjunct pluto
    mars opposite saturn

  69. Here’s one for anyone with an interest in Pluto aspects

Synastry: Sun square Pluto, sun conjunct Amor, sun conjunct psyche, Pluto conjunct moon, Venus square Pluto, (they have Venus square Pluto)natal also, mars sextile Venus, Mars conjunct Sappho and trine Uranus (they have mars square Uranus natal mars) tine Jupiter, Venus conjunct Neptune and sun conjunct Venus and Eros square Pluto, Eros conjunct kaali, Venus conjunct kaali all opposite Nessus!!

Composite: moon conjunct Neptune, Venus square Pluto, Black moon lilth conjunct Pluto square mars conjunct ceres……..any explanations on this type of relationship would be very helpful!!??
