Beyond the Wound: Chiron in Synastry (an excerpt)

Beyond the Wound: Chiron in Synastry (an excerpt)

Dawn Bodrogi May 20, 2014

This is an excerpt from my forthcoming ebook, “Beyond the Wound:  Chiron in Synastry.”  This section deals with typical patterns in Chiron-dominant relationships.  You’ll recognize some of it if you’ve been reading this blog for a few years.  Much of it is new.

Beyond the woundWhen Chiron is prominent in a synastry, particularly if it makes conjunctions to relationship planets or hits an angle, we are drawn into the relationship because we sense we are separated from the divine world and we have a strong instinct to heal the rift. We sense that something is missing in our lives, and we want it back, now. This is true to some extent of all relationships—we sense the divine through ‘other.’ But only Chiron contacts whisper that elusive promise of spiritual completion. We may not recognize Chiron’s pull, at first, as a desire to heal an inner rift, but we sense that this particular relationship is the only thing that can make us feel whole again, just in the place where we feel most empty, rejected and forlorn. This is very seductive. The other person promises to become the vehicle for all the transforming powers of the universe, our own personal conduit between the earth and the stars and back again. This person will deliver the goods that we didn’t think we would/could ever get. It’s not the illusion of spiritual melding that Neptune implies, or Uranus’s promise of perpetual excitement. The initial impetus with Chiron contacts is deliverance: this person appeared in my life specifically to take me where I need to go. The implied thought being: ‘and I don’t have to be hungry, inadequate or rejected anymore. This relationship is the answer. The Struggle Bus stops here.’ Beyond the Wound.

Chiron contacts are powerful and passionate at first, with the combined promise of innate hungers fulfilled and innate flaws mended. There is also a physical, earthy element to Chiron that taps into his animal nature, and Chiron contacts can be highly sexual. Like any planet or asteroid in the chart, Chiron has his good and his bad side, and Chiron contacts indicate that a great deal of healing can be achieved. Unfortunately, the process involves hitting all the most sensitive, painful buttons whilst trying not to lose love for one another. Chiron can be a real test of the depth of feeling between two people, because the hurt, usually, is inadvertent. They say, “ I’m not so much targeting you in a Plutonian way as I am constantly, accidentally, shredding your heart, because I can’t help it.” The cruelties that are expressed in Chiron’s name can be shocking. Chiron contacts can be remarkably long-lived as well, depending on how much we have been taught to associate pain with love. For some of us, it will seem endless.

What begins as a promise of wholeness often ends with a ruthless tearing–real healing can occur only when whatever is festering inside can be cleansed. Only then can a wound be closed. Chiron contacts can feel and serve just like those procedures where an already painful and distorted wound is re-opened and probed, so that the poison can be burned out. Chiron-dominant relationships provide this soul-searing. Without this cleansing, we cannot have the kind of inner balance that translates to spiritual strength. Whether or not a relationship can be salvaged, with Chiron, we are given a choice: we can move through the world as the limping, distorted god-in-exile, or we can take our new found knowledge and negotiate our world with grace and strength, like the immortals we are.

There are some typical relationship patterns and signatures that are associated with Chiron: Beyond the Wound.

Unequal and Inadequate

It is often the case with Chiron-dominant relationships that one partner is more conscious and spiritually aware than the other, and it is often this more aware partner who suffers the most from the partnership. Chiron, the wise healer and teacher, is always pushing us towards the awareness of what is best in us, and burning away what is holding us back. This may sound rather Plutonian, but Pluto has a different agenda. Pluto wants us to lose the ego in favor of a higher perspective. It wants us to stop grasping at small straws. Chiron relationships place us smack in the middle of our own limitations. The ‘burn’ of the Chiron-carrying partner can be humiliation, shame, and self-abnigation. “I am not, nor will I ever be, good enough.” We are so busy chanting this mantra that we cease to notice that the person we believe we are not good enough for is not fit to shine our shoes, spiritually speaking.

Unfortunately, with Chiron, the process is always painful, and unlike the pain of outer planet lessons, Chiron contacts hurt us exactly where we are the most sensitive. Much of this has to do with whatever else Chiron hits in our natal charts. If Chiron is opposite our Moon, for example, and we have issues about body image, Chiron may draw to us a partner who is undeniably cruel to us in this respect. If Chiron is square to Mercury, our intelligence may be questioned. The keyword, again, is transcendence: we are meant to get beyond this pain in order to learn the strength and compassion we have learned through and because of the pain. When we are involved in Chiron relationships, Chiron is often whispering the word ‘sacrifice’ in our ear, but we misunderstand his meaning. We are being asked not to sacrifice ourselves, but our attachment to the wound.

In a relationship of this type, typically the Chiron person will subjugate themselves over and over again. He or she will shake the pain off only to be hit by it again the next time around. They will make excuses for the cruelty, claiming the partner doesn’t realize the hurt they are causing. Many times, the wounding partner is blissfully unaware. Often, the Chiron person lives in a world of potential and possibility for the relationship. “If only” and “when.” The sad truth is that the Chiron person sees the full potential of the relationship. Chiron’s shamanic gift gives the ability to see beyond the mundane, through to other worlds and other levels of awareness. When Chiron is activated between charts, the planet person inadvertently fires up these special abilities, causing Chiron to see the planet person for what they may become, not what they are. Unfortunately, Chiron mistakes the potential for reality, and relates to the planet person on this level. This causes the planet person to begin to itch under the Chiron person’s scrutiny. Sadly, again, the Chiron person will not realize why.

The ‘planet’ person may feel inadequate, or in need of healing, vulnerable, when they were perfectly okay before the Chiron person came along. Mainly, they sense that they don’t measure up in some mysterious way. The Chiron person may declare desperate, undying love, and yet the planet person will only hear and feel the negativity, the lack. The more the Chiron person declares, the more the planet person will want to remove him or herself from the uncomfortable situation. The planet person will ultimately want to escape Chiron—imagine being scrutinized through the eyes of a god all the time. Often, the planet person reacts with fear, a fear of their own potential.

This may all sound very Neptunian, especially to those of us familiar with Neptune’s ways. But Neptune’s blindness to reality is a different breed than Chiron’s. Both are living in a world of potential. Yet with Chiron, our blindness comes from a desperation to heal, to be released from the pain and limitation of this world while still remaining within it. Its relationship is not based on self-deception, disillusion and betrayal. Neptune’s blindness is rooted in a need to be delivered, to escape reality and experience divinity directly. Neptune’s hunger for the divine turns the partner (temporarily, at least)into a living god. Chiron is desperate to assuage a long-felt inadequacy and exile from union with the universal, to heal the wounds of abandonment. It wants to belong. Neptune creates false gods, but Chiron’s love is rooted in a level of reality, and can be more painful for it.

When Chiron ultimately discovers that the planet partner is blind to its own divinity, Chiron sets out to test that divinity, to prove it exists. Chiron relationships can get very messy at this point. Chiron says, “You are be wonderful, look how I cherish you, look at the worship in my eyes.” The planet person will then do its best to deliberately and cruelly rip that worship away, consciously or unconsciously. At some point, the Chiron person will wake up to the fact that the planet person was not yet the person in their imaging, and may never be that person in this lifetime. Sometimes the Chiron person won’t see this at all, and will be forced to surrender the relationship without realizing that the longed-for healing will never take place. Instead of transcendence and awareness through pain, Chiron surrenders its wisdom to the wound—and the cycle will begin again.

Student/Teacher

The other way Chiron declares itself in relationship is in one partner clearly acting as teacher/guru and the other as student. These can work well when the relationship is literally student/teacher. This kind of Chiron contact is also common between family members. It doesn’t matter which way the contact goes, sometimes the student can become an important teacher to the teacher. But in a romantic relationship, this dynamic has its limits. One party worships at the other’s feet, and the receiver of the worship leads and guides. Each can stimulate the qualities of wisdom, patience, and understanding in the other. However, at some point in a romantic scenario, the worshipper begins chafing at the bit. He or she has experienced the required growth and wants to break free, and it is the instinct of the teacher to cling to the student, to do anything to keep them dependent and near. Ultimately, the teacher will have to sacrifice its dominant position and let the student go. It will feel like a betrayal, with the teacher’s ego inflation exposed, and there is often an element of humiliation involved. When the Chiron person is the student, it is asking deliverance through the planet Chiron touches in the other person’s chart; that planet can become inflated in importance in the relationship, and this can be difficult if it is one of the relationship planets: Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or Saturn. Again, there can be feelings of inadequacy in both parties, which can lead to anger.

It becomes complicated when Chiron reflects the Svengali syndrome—one person (usually the planet person) expresses the untapped and unrecognized talents of the other (often the Chiron person); The Chiron person has a painful need to be seen, to be recognized in this particular way. The hunger for recognition can be palpable, yet the Chiron person must watch the other person live out what he believes is rightfully his. Think of Salieri in the play and film, Amadeus, convinced he was betrayed by a god who gave genius to an immature and ungrateful Mozart. There is often envy of skills and abilities where Chiron is concerned.

Chiron and the Sixth House

Chiron relationships are often dramatic, with great highs and lows. This is often because so much is at stake, and we sense it. Whether or not we later (post Chiron return) make a contribution to the world, whether or not we have a legacy of wisdom to leave behind us, has a great deal to do with what we gain in our daily Chiron interactions. Chiron is related to the sixth house, and the sixth house is a house of crisis. The sixth house is a testing house, where we sort out the chaff from the grain in a very Virgo-like manner. The sixth house brings things to a head in order to heal. Any planet in it will be tested for readiness and strength. Any planet in the sixth house must be engaged in service. In the sixth house, we face our inadequacies and imbalances and pull ourselves together. Chiron in relationships focuses on this dynamic. The goal of Chiron in relationship is to help us heal. When we are whole, we can serve from a position of strength.

Sometimes with Chiron there is literal illness that repeatedly affects a relationship. One party becomes the one who is ill, the other steps in as the healer/caretaker. If this is the case there is often a mutual need to recognize that healing comes from within an individual. If we are ‘broken,’ we may never be the same, but do we want to be? As Leonard Cohen puts it, “Forget your perfect offering; there is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Accepting this lack of perfection in and through ‘other’ is a large part of this dynamic.

Chiron contacts between charts often bring out experiences of the other-worldly kind. If we are open to these metaphysical experiences, it can be an adventure to see how far out into the realms we can go. But with most Chiron relationships, there is a fear barrier, a reluctance to experience things not of this world. Knowledge brings responsibility, and we don’t know what we will find. We may have past life visions, lucid dreaming, messages from beyond, out of body experiences that urge us to alter our current habits and behaviors. We may not be willing to do that.

The most common question asked about Chiron in synastry is: Who inflicts the hurt, the person with the Chiron or the person with the planet/angle? The answer is, “both.” Much depends on what our pain has made of us. Has our suffering caused us to become better, wiser, more compassionate individuals, or has it caused us to turn our backs on others and become numbed by the inner dynamic of “I, me, mine”? I have seen a completely unconscious Chiron wreak havoc throughout a family, and I have seen many a strong, developed Chiron turn individual confusion and loss into enlightened contribution. Chiron is a blessing– if it is not strong in our charts we may succeed, but we may never find our real purpose. Each Chiron relationship is a little rehearsal for what is, ultimately, the relationship between our deepest inner being and the outer world. And when our inner world and our outer world are in sync, we have contentment at the very least and the possibility of joy. We have Chiron to thank for that.

  1. wow!

your rift on 6th house chiron especially resonates for me; but what a great intro into your ebook! i’m in.

(where is the progression book? please put your wisdom out there!)

  2. ….this post brought tears to my eyes: I have chiron conjunct my ascendant, and every relationship I have -playes out these themes- especially since every relationship I have is with my genertion group- and always pluto-uranus opposite chiron, and neptune trine my chiron….. then add a few personal planet synastry like my recent relationship: his venus is conjunct my chiron- ascendant- his pluto is opposite and neptune trine. I dont know what to do.. this is very painful- your post is very accurate. ,,,,so how can I heal?… if every relationship is chironic?…. I can’t wait to read your book. thank you..

    1. Mika, Chiron is gradually giving you the wisdom to change your choice of partners. Chiron on the Asc wants you to grow into the wise teacher; your painful Chiron experiences will be the vehicle for your greatest wisdom. Eventually, you will help others to heal. But in the meantime, try to choose partners who are your spiritual equals; don’t become the one who ‘saves’ or ‘helps’ or ‘heals’ the other–recognize that we are all wounded in some way, and begin finding common ground there.

  3. This excerpt blew my mind. The “unequal and inadequate” pattern was an uncannily accurate description of a relationship I had, where I was the Chiron person. (I just wish I could remember my ex-significant other’s birthday…if I remember right my Chiron was opposite his Venus.) It also helped flesh out my understanding of Chiron generally. Thanks!

  4. Excellent article, Dawn! Thanks a lot! Very clear and profound as always) The best mix of Virgo and Neptunian energies)

  5. Still recovering from a beautiful and brutal chiron interaction. It was years ago but it feels like yesterday. Thank you for your kind and insightful explanations. Never did I meet a person that influenced my life so deeply, that I have loved so much, and have had to walk away from so completely, but at least I can hope that I have left him the same kind of contribution.

  6. “The ‘burn’ of the Chiron-carrying partner can be humiliation, shame, and self-abnigation. “I am not, nor will I ever be, good enough.”” Bullseye, Dawn. You absolutely resurrected a very important Chirotic relationship that I had a few years ago. The breakup was so very painful, to the core really, but it did absolutely open wounds that I would gladly have lived my life trying to keep from being ripped open. The experience has ultimately helped me to have a more mature relationship with relationships, but I wouldn’t go back to that relationship for any amount of money. Thank you, as always, for your soulful work.

  7. Great Article Dawn.
Do you work with the concept of ‘Hyleg’? (i.e. the closest planet to the ascendant on upper part of chart.) What happens when Chiron is the ‘hyleg’ at the start of the 12H, in Aries?
In the case, it also quincunxes DC exactly and opposes Mercury/Uranus conjunction in Libra 6H.

    Thank you

  8. What I typically feel from the Chiron person is “I will hurt you before you hurt me”. It becomes a battle with a heavily sedated type of feeling. Many projections are put onto the planet person, they react (esp. the Moon) in a way that is natural and w/out intentional abuse but it becomes very obvious that this is what Chiron, as a concept, wants you to do. Even those aware of their Chiron energies or wounds consciously put the planet person in a position of slavery. “Until I deal with this from an adult perspective, I will use you as my target.” Chiron individuals may whine and complain about a long string of painful and repeated memories but when the planet person begins to shake things up b/c they need the very tlc Chiron has been ‘denied’, it certainly becomes a draining experience. In many ways it’s not the planet person that is a drag or the one who needs a lesson. Chiron-laden individuals need to accept that they cause pain too & it’s unhealthy to project.

    1. Unevolved Chiron certainly can inflict pain. A VERY unevolved Chiron may do it intentionally, but this is not the norm. Chiron can become twisted, just like anything else in the chart.

  9. Can you offer insight into a synastry connection where one person’s Chiron is conjunct the other person’s Ascendant? I had this with an ex of mine, and I’m wondering whether the way I presented myself hurt him in ways I didn’t understand. We have other Chiron connections between us, but this one interests me the most because it’s our tightest one…my ascendant, his chiron.

Could my orientation to life feel like an attack to his well being (that’s what he made it sound like)? Could his sensitivity to the way I go about things cause me to re-evaluate how I operate within the world? I feel like that’s it essentially, mainly because that’s what’s happening right now, but I’d still appreciate some insight.

    1. Chiron/Ascendant is not one of the more painful Chiron contacts, but it can be very subtle and very persistent in its influence. Your Asc defines how you operate in the world; it is the “I” that you drive to get from place to place. It evolves, it changes, but remains an anchor point in the psyche. When another person’s Chiron hits the Ascendant, it usually happens that the Chiron is drawn to the other person’s growth and evolution. The Chiron person may even feel that it is necessary to his/her healing process. However, the usual way of things is that the Asc person grows in ways that are painful to the Chiron person; Chiron feels vulnerable at the least and ineffectual at best. The Asc person may feel that Chiron is holding them back; they may not want or need the healing ‘dance’ that Chiron is offering. It can dwindle to a point where they cannot be in a room together without feeling some kind of hurt or resentment. The Asc person may need to re-evaluate if the Chiron person is wise and observant, but mostly they are glad to get away from the constant pain of Chiron.

  10. i’m sorry
    i’m not a native speaker

and i didn’t understand what “the person we believe we are not good enough for is not fit to shine our shoes, spiritually speaking.” means?

    1. It means that the person whom we initially believe is superior to us, turns out to be a much lesser being than we thought. Through our mistake, we discover the wisdom of our own spirituality.

  11. ok, i understand now but let me ask you that if there is a conjunction between one’s chiron and another’s sun, doesn’t it mean that where chiron is lacking is the area that the sun shines naturally? in these situation, how can chiron be spiritually superior than sun?

  12. and in these sentences, i didn’t understand who causes the wound? chiron or the planet?

“In a relationship of this type, typically the Chiron person will subjugate themselves over and over again. He or she will shake the pain off only to be hit by it again the next time around. They will make excuses for the cruelty, claiming the partner doesn’t realize the hurt they are causing. Many times, the wounding partner is blissfully unaware.”

(sorry for asking for explanation but the whole meaning changes if i don’t understand this.)

  13. I have several contacts between Chrion and my husband. We are very different but at present we have a very happy and compatible relationship – the differences compliment one another and there is no drama at all. But I have little experience with Chiron so I’ll be keeping an eye out for the potential to inflict wounds on one another. Always enjoy reading your blog Dawn and looking forward to the ebook.

  14. Thanks so much for your always illuminating, deeply insightful sharing, Dawn.

I am facing an old relationship as well as a new one, each with composite Chiron-Moon conjunct. What would be unique about these from synastric conjunctions?

    1. The difference between composite aspects and inter-chart natal aspects is this: the composite aspects are what the couple ‘gives off’ whereas the inter-chart aspects are what happens between them. If my Moon is conjunct your Chiron, you will feel Chiron whenever I express myself emotionally. Not pleasant. If your Moon is conjunct my Chiron, I will be faced with either embracing my Chirotic limitations and gifts, or running away from them, when you are emotionally open to me. We may have a long history of this between us. It will be hard for us to connect unless both of us are committed to working through the pain. In composite, however, we may give off a healing vibe that has others coming to see us. We may be devoted to healing ourselves and others. We may turn our vulnerability into a strength. Or, if we are not mature, it may all go belly up. Chiron is all about maturity and acceptance. If we have given up blame and insecurity, we can use his wisdom.

  15. My moon conjuncts his Chiron/North Node/and MC in Gemini.

Putting me on a pedestal is an understatement. Encouraging my divinity and potential- absolutely. However, when he felt a crossroads between pursuing a relationship with me and his studies/career, he asked for time to think. Communication vanished. He disappeared.

What hurts is that our emotionally honest and consistent communication has been one of the treasures of our dynamic.

So, I see the communication (Gemini) pain (Chiron). But, I thought my moon hitting those sensitive points in his chart (my moon hits his MC exactly) would have been a GOOD thing. I thought my emotional expression would be supportive.

Am I missing something in the interpretation here? The reality is very hurtful and different to what was felt.

Thank you, Dawn. Very insightful article.

    1. Unfortunately, whenever Chiron is evoked in a chart, we may find ourselves turning away. Particularly in synastry. If a light or strong planet of yours affects my Chiron, it may make me feel inadequate. All of my Chiron monsters will return. This is never pleasant.

  16. Thank you, Dawn. That offers clarity where there has been silence.

Is “unpleasant” the bottom line? Is the Chiron person more affected by pain?

How could my moon have been used as catalyst for Healing?

    Blessings.

  17. Why is everything always about couples & romantic relationships?
What about parent/offspring. My dear mum recently passed away. Her natal sun was conjunct my chiron which only I recently realised. When she died my progressed moon was conj chiron) I miss her terribly.. My chiron is trine venus, square mercury & opposite uranus..

    1. You’re right, Chiron has much to do with the parent or grandparent and child relationship. Chiron is about teaching, protecting, healing and the Chiron person often plays that role. If the child has the Chiron, often the child is the teacher to the parent. The relationship is often very close because of this extra affinity.

  18. I have a LOT to think about. If all this is true, it makes sense why I can’t get a certain someone out of my mind (that’s putting it mildly) but our chiron connections seem to be twinned – double trine chiron/venus, or at least mirrored in some way: chiron sq sun vs chiron square ASC. We also have south node connections – conj Venus vs conj Saturn and SN Sq MC, SN SQ ASC. yes, he’s driving me slowly insane but for some reason, I absolutely love it.

  19. Anybody longing for a shredded heart? My Chiron is found at thirteen degrees Aries, aspecting it most likely means also aspecting my Jupiter at nine degrees Capricorn. The Magi Astrology Society (who didn’t discover half of what they are claiming, most times they are only renaming, but they introduced Chiron as the main indicator of romance) recommends trines, conjunctions, or quinkunxes between one person’s Chiron and the other person’s Venus, Jupiter, or Neptune. Indepent astrologers have already confirmed Venus trine or conjunct Chiron. My Venus is found at twenty-nine degrees Libra. Anybody there with appropriate positions of Chiron and Venus for an experiment? (Too sad that no Aquarian Venus can be appropriate, because that would easiliest be persuaded…)

  20. But there are nevertheless many people reading here, aren’t they?

And the comments here come still after years. Currently I couldn’t gain anything anyway, because Saturn is currently transiting over my Sun.

Would I have found a better place for trying the experiment, then I would of course have used that.

  21. Hai Dawn. This article is so true to what I am currently experiencing with someone I have known for 2 years now. We have a lot of chiron contacts. Venus quincunx chiron double whammy, my chiron trine his moon, mercury, saturn and vertex. His chiron opposite my asc, quincunx my sun and mercury. The inadequacy, not measuring up to their expectations and the feeling deep hurt with their wants and ideal in a significant other is somehow mutual with the both of us. Fear of being hurt and rejected if we be our real selves is even more than all of it. The pain upon knowing there is potential and healing and strongly wanting to give unconditional love and acceptance, but that which is hampered or will be frowned upon due to the inadequacies is unbearable. What exactly did you mean by ” sacrificing the wound ” ? Did you mean to say, we have to let go the relationship? Can there be resolve in such relationships by working on the inadequacies and fear ? Please answer. Thanks in advance.

    1. Sacrificing the wound means getting beyond the pain in some way. When we are wounded by relationships, we often remain in a downward spiral of emotional entrapment. We need to get out of ourselves in the lower sense and enter a higher plane, something that our suffering eventually teaches us. We need to tap in to our own greater wisdom. Sometimes we can salvage the relationship, sometimes not.

  22. Thank you so much Dawn. I really appreciate your quick reply and for taking the time. Yes, I have hit rock bottom with all the rejection I have got in exchange for the love I gave. But I know where he is coming from and also, realise where I stand in this whole interaction. I have to work on my inadequacy and limitation before wanting so strongly to give love and show acceptance of their’s. Then maybe salvaging can happen, else I have to learn to let go the need to nurture another hurt human being and turn it towards self. Easier said than done. Thanks so much for the explanation. God bless.

  23. Thank you so much for sharing this! I can’t begin to explain how helpful your Chiron relationship posts have been. I’m involved with a man and his Moon is conjunct my Chiron. It’s always been a beautifully deep, out of this world and painful connection, very past life heavy as well. We lift each other in amazing ways but also trigger each other effortlessly and he seems to wound me in a deep way that no one else can. We parted a few times and I would drown in sadness until I finally stepped outside of myself. With my new vision and wisdom I healed and we are bonding again. I gained so much clarity by reading about Chiron relationships and I’m so thankful you are sharing your wisdom and insight! Thank you Dawn.

  24. I am so glad that I found this article! Thanks so much Dawn, it gave me clarity on Chiron. Mine is a 6th house and my boyfriends 12th house Chiron is conjunct mine in Synastry. We also have three aspects (my Saturn sextile his Chiron, his Mars opposite my Chiron and his Chiron trine my Jupiter). I have had a lot of hurt feelings and extreme sensitivity (I’m a Libra) during our relationship and he’s a Scorpio. So it’s a bit like a roller-coaster.
I do, however, feel that I am with him to help him get over pain from his painful childhood. I’ve felt like that since he first told me about it. And that’s not my normal way of thinking in a relationship. This one is very different. I think it’s the Chiron.

  25. Hi Dawn,
Love all your astrology but your Chiron is the best I’ve read. I have natal Chiron conjunct moon opposite Pluto! And your articles and knowledge have been extremely healing. I have just discovered that both my parents have their Chiron in Scorpio, one 6 degs and one 8 degrees, they are both conjunct my MC at 8 scorpio. It feels like my place in the world has been, is still affected by their wounds. Am I accurate here? I have been trying for a career change for three years, the same time period I have separated from them due to dysfunction and little insight on their part, or denial. I feel not being able to get ahead and these career blocks are somehow related? Are there any suggestions to best work with this dynamic? Many thanks Dawn xx

    1. Yes, Jo, you are right on the spot about the way this works. There is a section in my new Chiron book (upcoming shortly) that explains the damage that unacknowledged Chiron can do, particularly within families.

The best way to work with this is to acknowledge that you can choose not to be affected by familial collateral damage. You are your own person, and your knowledge frees you from carrying their baggage. Allow what you’ve learned to give you strength. We have to rise above the wound where Chiron is concerned. We have to get our egos out of the way in order to hear the whispers of our true calling. In your case, you are destined to get beyond the parental legacy and find what you truly have to give to the world. If you focus on that, you can’t go wrong.

  26. Dear Dawn
Thankyou so much for this insightful and intelligent reflection on Chiron. My ex of 20 years has Chiron 6th (conjuct Saturn 6th) conjunct Pisces Ascendant opp Uranus/Pluto 12th. It has given me great depth and understanding of the currents and forces underlying our relationship which was in the end, unfortunately, quite psychologically damaging. Even so, i have learnt and grown enormously from the experience. Bitter Sweet. Gina

  27. my daughters chiron is at 9 degrees aqu. in the 9th . My boyfriend who has helped raise her for 5 years now.. has jup. at 7 degrees aqu. is this conjunct and beneficial? If so – to whom? both? thoughts? =)

    1. As I’ve said numerous times on this site, in numerous ways, aspects between charts are felt by both people. We feel our own planet ‘awakened’ by the impact of other, and we feel the effect of the other planet. Jupiter falling in it’s own house, doubly indicating the archetype of ‘teacher’, is a no-brainer. It is too early to tell how your daughter will affect your boyfriend.

  28. Hi. I really like your site. I would very much like to understand how to work the opposition Chiron in synastry. If the conjunction causes pain, the opposition could work in reverse? I’m interested in a guy and we have a double whammy of Chiron opposite Venus. Both aspects are opposition and both are an orb of two degrees. This has puzzled me. I would love to know if there is potential for a happy connection or if I run away from it. Oh, also like to know, aspects to Chiron has fatalistic character such as lunar nodes or vertex? (I’m sorry for my English, I had to resort to an online translator).

    1. Nothing is fatalistic in astrology, especially Chiron, which is all about learning and choices. Astrology is only a map of potential, not the territory. Venus is about how we love, the way we love, what we value. When Chiron touches Venus, we often don’t feel appreciated by the other. We feel broken and unloved, even if the other person loves us intensely. I suggest you read my article on Venus/Chiron, which you can find in the archives via the search engine on the site.

  29. Hi. Thanks for answering. I’ve read everything on your site about chiron. I also read many other things, because you are always deep in their interpretations and I love it . Unfortunately, the only specific thing on opposite chiron to Venus in synastry I found was on the site of the “magi astrology” and they are no some leaders speak of impossible love, but I was intrigued to see how it could be if a double whammy. And in my case, it results in an exact aspect in the composite chart, so curiosity. I learned here with you that the conjunction is a tough aspect. But in many other places I read that Venus conjunction Chiron, could be an aspect of soul mate type. But really I do not find an interpretation that explains the instantaneous connection I feel with this guy. We have other aspects that could justify, but wanted to know about this, because of the symmetry, by engaging chiron…

    1. Chiron is about healing, or the potential to heal. When two people are both tied to Venus/Chiron, they are attracted to the broken quality in one another. There is a kind of exquisite ‘pain of loving’ that both can become addicted to, also a resigned quality that, ultimately, comes to the conclusion that love is a sad business. Sometimes it indicates two people to stay together in spite of the pain, because both feel there is something valuable in it.

  30. thank you so much for this information. ive been in a chiron opposite moon synastry relationship for the passed year. i am the chiron person and yes, it all makes sense now. the pain, despair, potential. thank you

  31. My partner’s Chiron conjuncts my ascendant exactly. It’s a May-December relationship where he is much older than me, and very much my teacher. I often find myself crying. He completely shreds me, and I love him more than I’ve ever loved anyone. i want to feel that we are teaching each other. That I am helping him with his demons. But I can never be sure. He’s so confident and aloof at times. What does the Chiron person feel from this placement?

    1. It usually goes both ways–if you didn’t make him feel inadequate in some way, would he be shredding you? Things with Chiron get very complicated. He may be projecting a lot of his inadequacy onto you, and with his Chiron on your Asc you will readily pick it up. You want to heal him, so you know things are not all right with him, and yet he rejects your healing. Stop being crippled by his Chiron. Walk away for a minute and breathe some fresh air. Rediscover yourself.

  32. Hi Dawn, can you tell me about Chiron in a composite chart, please? More specifically, opposite Mars?

  33. Dear Dawn, In the early morning of 5 am, just reading this article is overwhelmingly therapeutic! Everything happens for a reason under the mighty universe.
I have this encounter of my venus opposite his chiron, and my chiron opposite his sun. It has been six years… In the middle of pluto square of my sun, saturn sextile my venus, I am aware of that I am under a total transformation of life, a total healing. Thank you so very much! Please inform me how to buy your ebook? And today venus enters leo, conjuncts my jupiter, What a day! Thank you, my deepest gratitude!

    1. I can’t lie to you, this is a very difficult aspect to put a happy face on. Growth comes through dealing with one’s (and one another’s) limitations.

  34. You mention Chiron is related to the sixth house What if Chiron is actually in the Sixth house in a chart. My Chiron is in Aquarius in the sixth house for example

Also what if multiple planets are conjunct to another’s Chiron, my Sun Venus and mercury to her Chiron for example, oddly enough both our Mercuries are also conjunct as well as my Venus and Sun to her mercury.

I really hadn’t considered this but Chiron seems to have an extemely prominant placement in the situation, When I did a synastry analysis we seemed to have extraordinarily high positives which well outweighed the above average negative negative score and although there were no red flags I now wonder about these chiron aspects.effect When I compared it to the somewhat standard of Paul Newman’s relationship we had more positives with a more than a few more of the strongest compatibility aspects but though there seems to be a very strong attraction there is also some unexplained distance and I wonder if Chiron might be a factor

    1. Chiron in the sixth is looking both for internal balance and a purpose, and neither ever seems to be there. It wants to serve, to do something useful. This is an elusive goal, until ego gets out of the way and we see that the path that is asked of us is not necessarily the one we picked out for ourselves. Whenever Chiron is stimulated between charts (it doesn’t really matter which planet/s) there is suffering which leads to growth and healing. Even the gentlest of benefics can wound in this situation.

You can’t compare synastries by ‘scoring’ how many negatives to positives. Synastry is a delicate business. If you are wondering about the distance in the relationship you should get a professional reading.

  35. Hello and thanks for your writing on chiron. Please wld you say a little about navigating a chiron trine mars synastry? Thank you very much.

  36. I have been hugely attracted, with intense feelings, for a person whose Chiron is exactly opposed mine (which is conjunct both our Saturns…! Hers is part of a T-square w the Moon).
The article describes a lot going on between us, with precision.
It is very interesting (and painful) to see those dynamics work intensely both ways, even without a close relationship!
We just couldn’t get close, due to the intensity and the pain it immediately evoked in both of us right from the start…
I’m looking forward to the book!

  37. What a beautifully informative article! The asteroids are always surprising me with their siginificance. Some years back my experiences were strongly Juno-themed, and during that time I did much learning and had many “ah-ha” moments surrounding Juno. Discovering your Chiron article this morning is likewise enlightening. I am taking classes at university right now, and have had many of them with the same instructor, with whom I feel a powerful connection (not necessarily romantic). Looking at his chart, the connection has strong Chiron cross-contacts (My chiron/moon square is semisquare his sun/moon midpoint exactly, with his Venus conjunct and Jupiter square my Chiron-and his Chiron/moon/nodes/Pluto structure sits on my Asc/Dsc with my Mars, to the degree). Our composite chart has a Sun/Chiron conjunction to the *minute*, on the nodes and opposing Uranus. There are many other cross contacts, but these are the tightest and relevant.
We sit and chat before class, and have a tremendous amount in common. He is about fifteen years my senior, and has a lifetime of experience in my field of study. We each, on so may occasions, pick up on what the other is thinking and feeling, though my unbridled enthusiasm irritates him some (my mars conjunct his moon). I can definitely feel the potential to, as your article states, have my soul seared and my heart shredded…
This article puts a lot of perspective on the Chiron student/teacher theme, but he has many students, most of them a solid twenty years younger than me. I wonder very much what Chiron will bring, here, where it is so strong.

    1. I’m sorry, but you cannot read a chart from a list of aspects, and at any rate that is not the purpose of this site. Please check my reading list under the ‘learn’ tab, and read more of this site, to expand your knowledge of astrology. And don’t be frightened or worried–astrology is not about being helpless; it is about presenting us with choices, so that we understand ourselves better.

  39. May I ask about when a marriage has Chiron conjuct Chiron how it manifest? I think I have a sense of the energies of Chiron between us, but it would be interesting to hear more insight. I have Chiron in the eighth house 5 degree and my husband has Chiron in the 11th house 9 degrees. Both are in Taurus. We have other aspects as well like both are square are Jupiter in Leo.

    1. I don’t really believe that we should dismiss so-called ‘generational’ aspects just because everyone around the same year has them. What happens often is that the partner then embodies the energies that we cannot see for ourselves, so the partner will carry the aspects of Chiron, Saturn, the outer planets, etc. that we cannot or will not face. We may both have new things to learn about these forces/energies. Planets will always manifest in their position in your own chart, so you will feel it in the 5th house and your husband will feel it in the 11th, but you both will feel a transit, for example, simultaneously. Sometimes I think it’s more difficult to be with someone the same age, with a lot of the same chart, than it is to be with a different kind of chart entirely.

  40. Dear Dawn,

    Incredible insights thank you ?
Am a student of Jungian Astrology and deeply drawn to Chiron archetype and everything to do with it.
Was wondering how and if you would you interpret Chiron in Aries (male) square Sun in Cancer (female- moi :). Lots of “thunderstorm”synastry between us including 10 years age diffebce and natal Cancer Moons that we both have at exactly the same degree:O “No letting go ??”

    Many thanks and best wishes.
May I kindly ask if the bonus readings would be available this winter solstice ?
    Alexandra

  41. What about when two people literally have one Chiron conjunct the other Chiron in synastry? Especially when the female has Chiron near the ASC and his Chiron is near his MC?

How would this play out when you throw Jupiter and North node contacts in the mix? As in his Jupiter conjunct her node and vice versa? Or planetary contacts to both Vertex as well?

    Is that karmic in anyway?

  42. My ex-partner and I are 4 months apart and over the course of the past 16 months experienced our Chiron returns. His Chiron is at 18 deg. Pisces and my Chiron is at 21 deg. Pisces so with the retrograde last year, I ended up with a quad return. My relationship ended abruptly, without warning and has been devastating… each time we try to reconnect to heal, we end up hurting each other and spinning into another pain/guilt cycle. This has been a longtime friendship that turned into an affair and has always had a strong intuitive and spiritual energy between us and up until Dec. 2015 was powerfully positive… It then turned powerfully painful. I have been studying Chiron and Chiron return for a couple months now. Your article accurately describes the feelings and has helped me release some of my shame for not being able to recover from the separation. The heartbreak has caused physical issues that I am only recently beginning to heal from after finding the strength to maintain separation from him. It has been like loving a poisonous wild animal… you see that the pain inflicted is only a result of them coming to terms with who they are, and you are deeply injured as part of the process, and helpless to protect yourself and them from themselves. Add in my Pisces Sun, Mars and Saturn opposite my Virgo Moon, Uranus and Pluto and well… you can imagine the year I’ve had! THANK YOU for all your work!

  43. Hi , i have the aspect ciron square chiron Witz my mothrer in synastry , can you say something about! Thank you!

  44. Amazing! I have perused your articles for years; and here I just stumbled upon this Chiron article after a general internet search for another reason, and it serendipitously relates perfectly to a certain unrequited relationship I have been trying to get over for several years. I thank you so much for this description. It is giving me the final articulation of what I need, in order to tie up the purgatory I’ve been stewing in for too long.

…I had already managed to arrive at the realization that I was seeing the other in a state of fully realized potential–what she could be, rather than as she actually is, And I realized that if I indeed ever had the relationship with her I had been pining for, I would be doing just as you describe (as the more spiritually aware person), and she would ever feel inadequate in my presence. I have a lot of Chiron aspects with her, with me being overwhelmingly the “Chiron person.” (I here include declinations, helio, and hello latitudes–a la Magi. They do seem often to reinforce any themes.)

In my case, I was emotionally as struck by lightning when we met, five years ago…. I had a mixture of overwhelming, intense emotions about this person, and eventually I was able to have flashes of some past-life dynamics between us that explained my current reaction to her, as I am often able to do when I meet “new” people. We are both female now, though in the past lives I see we were opposite genders in a most recent romantic association. Though she was able to acknowledge she had “feelings that she’s never had for another woman,” and I saw certain self-expression in her that I’m sure was newly awakened in her…in the end nothing has come of it.

The meeting in this lifetime did provide an answer to why I have been essentially closed off to love in this lifetime, as I was able to tune into my sense of having been traumatized when “she” (as the light of my life, back then) left me suddenly in the previous life, and I lived my remaining years in devastated shock and sadness, eventually returning to spirit form with the thought, “Well, that’s enough of that open heart business for me.” (I do have Venus square Chiron natally.)

So, I can be glad I figured that bit out, at the least (even if the other lovely synastry aspects that would suggest such promise come to naught…sigh).

…Fascinating business. Your description seems supernaturally astute to me. Thank you so much. …The final piece I needed in order to let this one go.

  45. I’m glad you wrote this. For some reason a large amount of the Chiron stuff I’d read had always stated that the Chiron person hurts the planet or point person. In my experience, every time I was Chiron I was intensely hurt by the person and I felt abandoned (especially in terms of contact as my Chiron is in Gemini) when they stopped talking to me. They always seemed fine. I’m also apart of the Uranus-Chiron opposition generation so perhaps that was a part of it.

I’m very drawn to a man who I have a large amount of Chiron stuff with. He has some strong Chiron in his own chart (it Squares his NN closely, is loosely Square his Venus, and loosely Opp his Mars/Uranus Conjunction), and to be honest dealing with him doesn’t cause me pain. Following my thoughts about the Chiron person experieing the pain, I wonder if he is ok. Between us we have Chiron Trine Sun, loosely Conjunct Venus, Trine Mars, Square Jupiter, Opp Saturn and the one I’m terrified about Conjunct NN (exact). He’s a great guy….I just don’t know what to do with him. I think we both associate love with pain and/or hardship (him with his Chiron stuff, me with my strong Saturn)…so I don’t know what this means.

Also why is Chiron NN so bad? I don’t see any negative to it at all…in fact I almost feel like where I am going is where he has been with my NN in Taurus 11th house…his NN is in Leo with Chiron in Taurus.

    1. Chiron/NN is challenging in the same way all NN conjunctions are challenging–we have to master that planet en route to becoming that NN. Put anything there–Venus, Mars, Jupiter–and life teaches us hard lessons. With Chiron conjunct the NN we have to face down the wound, make sacrifices, transcend our own broken being, and evolve, all to gain our spiritual inner wisdom. It’s a tall order. Some people are attracted to Chiron type relationships, others are not. It’s very personal.

  46. In the past five and a half years I’ve located two siblings, the first (a sister), five years ago, and the second (a brother) just recently. Both siblings were given up for adoption by my then unwed mother years before she met and married, had children with my father.

What I don’t think I ever fully appreciated until now, is the spiritual dimension of close Chiron contacts and their ability to reach through time and space in order to remind and connect us to the divine, which is LOVE.

There are numerous very close (mutual) Chiron aspects between myself and both siblings. Although my mother never gave me or anyone else any reason to suspect, I knew. I found my sister through a combination of intuition and synchronicity, and my brother through a series of dreams which began shortly after finding my sister. During the five years of dreaming about my brother, I was shown his birth, watched him grow into a man, knew his struggles and even his name.

I also knew how much both he and my sister were loved by our now-deceased mother, just as I knew I was meant to find and tell them. It’s no small thing to have someone find you through dreams; adoption reunions can be complicated anyway. Since my relationship with my sister quickly became unhealthy and ended abruptly, I’ve made a special effort with my brother to go slowly and to try to establish healthy boundaries, to try to make it more about the message and less about me as the messenger. To make the point that I’m not the prize, my brother is and always has been.

There was a strong and immediate emotional connection between myself and both of my siblings, one that doesn’t seem to exist between either of them or with other biological family members ~ only me. It would be an understatement to say neither of my siblings have had easy lives, and I admit to feeling deeply connected to their pain and of wanting to convey something deeper without adding to their struggles. I’m also painfully aware I can only love, not fix either of them. Like I said, it’s about something bigger than me.

Reading this post has helped me understand. Thanks, Dawn.

I also want to add how these two relationships, probably more than other relationships in my life, have helped me to recognize and heal previously-denied aspects of my shadow, and to see my mother’s shadow more clearly as well.

  47. Fantastic insight into Chiron, thank you so much Dawn! I found your site in search of “Chiron conjunct Sun synastry” – my Chiron in 11th house Gemini is conjunct this man’s Sun (and Venus, for that matter, in a 1 degree orb). I do not know his rising sign but we have many other aspects – i.e. my Venus & Pluto conjunct his Mars & Saturn (in Scorpio no less!). His moon is also conjunct my 5th house Sun in Sag, which is in tight opposition to my Chiron and his Sun/Venus. Lots of ego stuff going on, and intense energy. So much of what you’ve said resonates – turning away, inadequacy, avoiding vulnerability, fear…… but given our similar wounds (family loss, abuse, etc), I was hopeful that it could be a constructive and growing relationship. I am going to search for your Chiron/Venus article now, and any thoughts you have to share would be so appreciated!

    1. This is brilliant. Thank you very much. I live this a lot. Chiron conjunct mars. Scorpio moon. A lot of chironic relationships.

  48. Hi Dawn,

I am re-reading a lot of your articles and finding new information (or perhaps just understanding it better). My Aquarius Chiron is in my third house and makes happy aspects to all of my personal planets except Mercury in Taurus (far square-9 degree orb). It is sextile both my sun/venus conjunction in Aries and my first house saturn in Sag, and trine my 7th house mars in gemini. I have never really gotten along with my siblings. I was the brainiac of the family, and the “good child” and the jealousyand abuse I experienced from my sister and my two brothers ranged from name calling to setting me up to be punished. Even now that we are all late middle age (the baby will be 57) our relationships are still fraught with tension. They always seemed to go out of their way to make me feel ugly and stupid (I am far from either) and totally inadequate. Three years ago I met a man who I ound so attractive, it scared me. It scared me so much that I not only threw away his number, but then I fished it out of the trash can, tore it up and burned the scraps. a couple of years later he turned up on FB as someone you may know, and I sent him a friend request. He does not remember meeting me. His sun conjuncts my chiron within a three degree orb. His moon/chiron conjunction is conjunct my Juno, and opposite my Jupiter. All of this ties into our MC/IC which are conjunct. Even though I am older than he by 11 years, our friendship (very long distance at this point) is very much one of him providing me with a lot of very good advice and counseling, to the point where when I told him that I really did not want our relationship characterized by him being my personal Dr. Phil, he was somewhat offended. I find his advice very soothing and healing, and have recounted painful life episodes with him that it takes others years to hear, if they hear them at all. I will, at aome point, contact you for a reading on this matter since there is a lot more going on than the Chiron, but your article expressed my experience with him so well that I had to share. And of course, if you have anything to add, I would be very happy to hear it.

  49. What does it mean when a partner’s 3td house, Taurus chiron opposes the others 12v house Scorpio juno and juno asc? Thank you!

  50. Hi Dawn, I have been incredibly interested in Chiron over the past 10 years for a multitude of reasons so I am looking forward to your book. I have Chiron in the eight house ( 2 Aries ) conjunct my NN ( Aries Point- 0 Aries) conjunct my Sun ( 3 Aries ) Opposite Jupiter ( 0 Libra ), Uranus ( 1 Libra ) and Pluto ( 23 Virgo) also trine Neptune and Mars. The amount of pain I have felt within every aspect of my life has forced a surrender to the source over the course of the last 48 years and most prominently through a chirotic love relationship in the last 8, with a man who I thought was a twin soul but played out much like you describe above in a teacher/student way. He left and I was eviscerated. I am a spiritual person, I practice it and I believe the universe has good in it for me. I try to understand the why’s of life, and have attempted to understand that through astrology. But I am tired. Tired of the pain. And feeling like it will never subside. I want some kind of attainable and consistent joy in my life, with a partner, for me and my children and I am at a crossroads as I near my chiron return ( which also hits all of these aspects simultaneously) . I don’t feel like I will ever be able to find the happiness I desire and life has seemed to have gotten more difficult and painful, then less. I have been told that I need to be a healer to others in order to heal my own wound. But spirit has yet to show me how I should do this. And I have been left grasping at what feels like straws. If you have any insight on this I would greatly appreciate it.

So happy for you and your success with your new book and Inner Wheel. I am a long time fan.

  51. My Chiron in Libra aspects his Mars in Leo at the exact degree so that would form a sextile. My Chiron is also at the same degree with his Sun in Aries, which would form an opposition. What would that mean for us?

  52. So what would you say to.. his chiron opp her jupiter. Her chiron opp his jup. And chirons squaring each other. Her chiron conj his mercury and both chirons being retrograde. Would love some insight on it.

  53. I am considering adoption of a child whose Chiron and Nessus conjunct my NN exactly. Her NN conjuncts my Sun and anti-vertex. I’m scared of the Nessus/Chiron aspect to my NN, but have also heard that Chiron conjunct Nessus in the natal will contain her Nessus energy. What will the relationship feel like? Should I run?

  54. Hi Dawn,

In synastry, my Chiron exactly conjuncts his priapus h22. Would this be considered a deal breaker, or could it maybe be interpreted as a sexual healing type of situation? I haven’t been able to find information on this anywhere, and I would very much appreciate hearing your thoughts on it. Thank you!

  55. Very interesting article! I was looking at the synergy between a therapist and myself which showed Chiron links. My moon in 6th house is spot on his Chiron, and his ascendant falls right on my Chiron. He definitely healed me when I went to him in trauma in 2012. Looking back, I still miss him, and wish he was a part of my everyday life.

  56. Great text on Chiron. I loved it! Bravo! I’ve got to ask, though- just in case you didnt cover the case of Chiron conj. Chiron in synastry- How does that work? Is there any chance of positive growth, or is it a vicious circle- like thing?

  57. Hi Dawn,

Chiron Conjunct the IC in synastry? There wasn’t many questions or info on the angles.. Would it be similar to Chiron conj Moon in synastry? Would it show potential for healing to take place around the IC’s persons sense of home/belonging?

    Thanks in advance

  58. Thank you for writing this. It helped me finally leave a relationship which was destroying me. Amazing writing and explanation; well done.
