The Moon’s positioning in composite charts brings us to the essence of composites. Mostly, we think of the Moon as representing our emotions and attachments — what we find comfortable, what makes us feel secure, how we are best fed and nurtured. The trouble is, the composite chart is a chart of the relationship itself: the third thing created from two individual lives as they relate. How can this third thing, this entity, claim to have a seat of emotions?

Most of the time, folks look to the Moon in composite charts to see if a couple feels comfortable with one another — if they can rub together in a calm emotional flow without too much drama. But the composite Moon is so much more than that. It goes far beyond our comfort zones. On another level, it represents the reasons we have come together.

The Moon Body

In traditional and classic astrology, the Moon represents the body. Aspects to the Moon represent some of the many ways we are physically vulnerable. Moon conjunct Mars may bring on fevers. Neptune/Moon may face hard-to-heal infections. Uranus/Moon is famous for energy blowouts. The Moon shows where the physical world can invade our sensibilities — where the real world and the un-manifest world meet.

The Moon in Composite

A strong composite Moon can make us seem to change personalities, especially if it is very different from the natal Moon. The baseball and beer fan with a natal Moon in Taurus or Sagittarius may suddenly take to the more Libran or Leonine opera and wine in a new relationship. With a new partner, we may suddenly develop new habits, likes, and dislikes. Old friends may think this is a new false self. But if it’s genuine, this new horizon is growth within a relationship.

The Moon in a composite chart is as strong as the Sun — perhaps more so. The Sun shows us the focus and creative energy of the relationship here and now. The Moon shows us where we have been together and what habits and patterns we have had as a couple. And usually, until we get older and begin to grow together, the Moon’s habits trump the Sun’s urging forward.

Aspects to the Moon in a composite chart will tell us whether, as a couple, we are doves or hawks. Will we coo together peacefully — Moon conjunct Venus or Jupiter — or do we express our relationship’s emotional level through conflict, as squares from Mars or Pluto might imply? The houses where these aspects reside tell us the areas of life that may trigger our conflicts.

The Moon and the Nodes

“If there is karma in a relationship, where do you see it?” This is one of the things I am most often asked. One of the quickest ways of telling if a relationship “has been” is to note the Moon and the condition of the South Node. The composite Moon itself tells you a lot. Adding the South Node helps you discern what a couple needs to learn from this current life.

The Moon represents the pattern, and the Nodes represent the resolution and growth of that pattern — remember, the Nodes are the Moon’s Nodes. Together, the Moon and the Nodes give you both the echoes of the past and the guiding whispers towards the future.

Example: Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon

One example can be seen in the long-term but tempestuous relationship between Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon (1977-1985, married 1983-4). Carrie’s honesty in her books and one-woman show Wishful Drinking, and Paul’s raw lyrics in his Wisdom of the Saints album confirm what the composite chart already shows.

In the composite, the Moon is in Gemini in the Eighth House. Carrie said their relationship in the beginning consisted of “words, words, words, beautiful words, lovely words…” This implies the intimacy and seductive abilities of that Gemini Moon in the Eighth House — a couple bound to communicate and maintain verbal intimacy. The Moon trines the Sun/Venus/North Node and the Moon’s own dispositor, Mercury. The intellectual connection was everything. On the darker side, the Eighth House Moon likes to dig down deep. It uses words as a tool, creating an intellectual probing and cold analysis that feels downright uncomfortable.

Without the nodal story, the chart looks very strong. Trines go from Sun/Venus/Mercury to the Moon and to the glue of the chart, Saturn, hunkered down on the IC. But red flags exist. A semi-square to a Leo Jupiter indicates a tendency to exaggeration and excess.

Couples with Aries/Libra nodes have a specific lesson to learn — how to be a couple, how to relate the I within the we. With the South Node in Aries, the individual I was dominant in the past. The Twelfth House influence emphasises this. The South Node in the Sixth House suggests they worked together in a prior life.

Mars is the ruler of the South Node, in the Fifth House at 29 Pisces — its strongest position, the sign of artistic imagination, and co-ruler of the Scorpio Ascendant. With Scorpio rising, the relationship is intense and testing — constantly probing boundaries. The square from that dominant Mars to Uranus shows the explosive, contentious nature of the connection. This erratic Mars has a tight quincunx to Mercury and lesser quincunxes to the North Node, Venus, and the Sun. The trines from the Moon and Saturn are not strong enough to overcome the power of Mars, nor the square from Pluto to the Asc/Desc axis. Not accidentally, both Paul and Carrie are Librans. They had to dig into their shadow sides to contact their own Mars energy.

Secrets Revealed

Could they have made it? The composite chart, with its strong North Node and Moon/Saturn, indicates the possibility. But we must go back to the natal charts to see if the compromises and challenges could be overcome. The Moon and the South Node in the composite indicate deeply entrenched habitual behaviours and sensitivities. They take an enormous amount of conscious awareness to overcome. But that’s what the North Node and the Sun are for.

The takeaway here is to look at the Moon as more than just a gauge of your comfort level. Like the Moon itself — with its interplay of shadow and light — the composite Moon holds many secrets.
