Quick — which god is the month January named after? Each year, as we look back on the old year behind us and the new one ahead, we are in his realm. He is the lord of transition. And we have largely forgotten who he is. We don’t often think of Jupiter when we think of a threshold, yet in his role as co-ruler of Pisces, Jupiter plays a pivotal role in creating the transition between endings and beginnings.

When we are at Pisces, the end of the known, we are left trembling at the brink. Either we leap forward into the unknown, or we fall back into safety. This is the dilemma of the Twelfth House. The fish swim both ways. At the turning point, we choose the light or the darkness — and it is here we must pray to the Lost God.

Janus: The Bridge Between Infinity and the Finite

The Romans understood that Janus stood at the gateway between heaven and earth. He was often invoked alongside Jupiter, traversing the conceptual space between the mundane and the sacred. While Saturn rules the limit of the material world, Janus embodies the transitional aspect of all things — doorways, bridges, and archways. He is the pivotal connecting point between the dance of time and space.

When we finally reach Jupiter in the chart, we are standing at the brink of endless potential, waiting for that potential to become concrete via Saturnian experience.

Jupiter vs. Neptune: The Hunger for the All

The urge to grow and be larger than life is Sagittarian at heart but shares the limitlessness of Pisces. There is a vital difference between the co-rulers: Neptune wants to dissolve into the All, while Jupiter wants to take it in and become the All. Both are fighting the limits of material existence — and which one wins out in your chart determines your reaction to the thresholds of life.

Invoking Safe Passage

Our society is plagued by worry — a misuse of the imagination. How much less anxious would we be if we felt there was a blessing available for safe passage? We need Janus now more than ever to ensure that Jupiter creates space for growth rather than just loss. By honouring the god of first steps, we transform our fear of the unknown into a visionary peek at our own rebirth. Start as you mean to go on, and trust the transition.
