Just after we are challenged to sort out our internal direction once and for all, life throws another hurdle in our path. Hooray, another Saturn Return. Yippee. Fortunately, most of us have made friends with Saturn by now — or at least, friendly acquaintances. Saturn is no longer the oppressor. If all goes well, he represents the duties we perform willingly and the guidance that forms our own lives and the lives of others.

At this point, Saturn can reward us. This transit can bring accolades, gifts, and rewards for work well done — work that we have honed over long years. No one ever thinks of Saturn as a gift-giver, but I have seen more awards passed out during Saturn-dominant times than Jupiter phases. When the great taskmaster nods his approval, it is often accompanied by something tangible and good in material terms.

Experience vs. Entrenchment

The bumps and bruises of the first Saturn return come from inexperience. The bruises of the second come when we are too entrenched. If the day-to-day workings of our world swallow us up and we cling to the past, we risk stagnation. Use it — work with what you know, pass it on, and take your old knowledge down a new road.

An Awakening of Mastery

The second Saturn return can be a shot in the arm for determination. As the clock ticks, we may feel a reawakening of ambition — but it is an ambition filtered through the wisdom of what we needn’t accomplish. What do I want to do? What do I need to do? By this age, we should be experts on the sign and house Saturn occupies in our charts. The more we understand these mechanics, the more liberated we become.

Saturn rewards the brave, the wise, and the ambitious. The purest expression of the planet combines all three. At this stage, it is time to breathe out, let go of the unlikely, and lean into the masterful authority you have earned through decades of right effort.
