Mavis Staples: The Soul of Resilience, Voice of a Generation

Chart Studies  ✦  Dawn Bodrogi  ✦  The Inner Wheel

Mavis Staples released her fourteenth solo album, Sad and Beautiful World, in November 2025. She is 86. She is the last living member of the Staple Singers. And the album is almost entirely covers — other people’s songs, tended and returned to the world with her voice on them. That’s the chart in a single gesture.

Mavis Staples was born July 10, 1939, in Chicago. Sun and Venus in Cancer, Moon and Jupiter in Aries. A Saturn-Pluto square at virtually zero orb. These are not soft placements. This is a chart built for the long work.

Cancer Sun, Aries Moon

The Cancer Sun is the keeper of things — family, community, the thread of continuity that runs through generations. The Staple Singers were her father’s band; she has been singing with and for her family since she was a child. That’s Cancer. It doesn’t separate the personal from the communal; it makes the communal personal. When Mavis Staples sings about freedom or justice or grief, it comes from the same place as singing about home. She doesn’t distinguish between them because Cancer doesn’t.

The Aries Moon is where the fire comes from. Cancer protects; Aries initiates. In a woman who marched with Dr. King and kept recording albums into her eighties, you need both. The Cancer Sun held the community. The Aries Moon put her on the front lines of it.

Jupiter also in Aries amplifies this — an expansive, optimistic, almost reckless faith in action and forward movement. At 86, still touring, still recording. That’s Jupiter in Aries. It doesn’t negotiate with age.

Saturn Square Pluto: Zero Orb

Saturn in Taurus, Pluto in Leo, square at virtually zero degrees of orb. This is the tightest aspect in the chart and the one that explains the most. Saturn-Pluto is not a comfortable aspect — it’s the aspect of those who meet systemic power and are forced to either break or find another kind of strength. It creates a person who has been through the dismantling of things and who rebuilds, again and again, in a more durable form.

Saturn in Taurus grounds this in the body, in the voice, in the tangible and enduring — the family legacy, the Chicago roots, the specific texture of a sound that took decades to develop. Pluto in Leo pours the power into performance and creative leadership. The square between them means the creative force (Pluto in Leo) has had to fight the weight of structure and limitation (Saturn in Taurus) every step of the way. That tension is what makes the voice what it is. It has been earned.

Sad and Beautiful World

The new album is almost entirely covers. A Cancer Sun at 86 choosing to steward other people’s songs rather than assert her own — Leonard Cohen, Curtis Mayfield, Tom Waits — and making each of them hers through the sheer fact of her voice and her history with the material. That’s what Cancer does with legacy. It doesn’t compete with it; it carries it forward.

One reviewer wrote that Mavis Staples is “kept so forward in the mix it’s like she’s whispering in the listener’s ear.” The Saturn-Pluto square, after eighty-six years, has produced this: a voice that doesn’t need to be loud. It just needs to be there, and the room changes.
