The Sun — Your Life-Force

Your Sun sign is what most people mean when they say “my sign.” It describes the quality of your life-force — the energy that animates you, the mode in which you are most fully yourself. It is not your personality in the simple sense. It is the sign that your vitality is organized around, the territory in which you are most fully alive when you are operating at your best.

The Moon — Your Emotional Life

Your Moon sign describes the quality of your inner emotional life — how you feel, what makes you feel safe, what the emotional body needs in order to function well. The Moon is often more personally recognizable than the Sun because it describes the private self rather than the public one. Most people find their Moon sign more accurate than their Sun sign when they first encounter it.

The Rising Sign — How You Meet the World

Your Rising sign — also called the Ascendant — is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes how you meet the world and how the world first meets you — the quality of your approach, your presence, the impression you make before anyone knows anything about you. In Whole Sign houses, the Rising sign is always the 1st house. It is the door, not the room behind it.

Chiron — The Wound and the Gift

Chiron is a centaur body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. In the natal chart it marks the place where the oldest wound lives — the sensitivity that arrived early, that keeps getting pressed on by the people closest to you, that has never quite healed. In Dawn’s framework, the wound and the gift are the same territory. The thing that hurt the most is also the source of the most specific and irreplaceable capacity you carry. Black Moon Lilith — The Exile and the Gift

Black Moon Lilith is a mathematical point — the lunar apogee, the place in the Moon’s orbit farthest from the Earth. In Dawn’s framework it marks the territory where something genuine was pushed underground — not because it was wrong, but because the environment that shaped you could not hold it. The exile and the gift are the same energy. What was pushed underground is still there, and it carries the most specific and irreplaceable contribution you have to make. Find your Lilith placement →

Do I need my birth time?

Yes — for your Rising sign and house placements. The Ascendant changes every two hours, so without a birth time the calculator cannot determine your Rising sign or which house each planet occupies. Your Sun, Moon, and Chiron sign will still be accurate from birth date alone in most cases. If you do not know your birth time, check your birth certificate or ask a parent. Even an approximate time — morning, afternoon, evening — produces a significantly more useful chart than no time at all.

What house system does this use?

This calculator uses Whole Sign houses. If you are comparing it with a Placidus chart, some planets may appear in different houses. The difference reflects the house system used, rather than necessarily indicating a calculation error.

What readings are included?

The calculator provides plain-language readings of your Sun, Moon, Rising sign, Chiron and Black Moon Lilith. A birth time is needed for your Rising sign and house placements. If your birth time is unknown, leave it blank and use the available sign information as a starting point.

What is the difference between Mean and True Lilith?

This calculator uses Mean Black Moon Lilith — the standard used in psychological astrology and the foundation of Dawn Bodrogi’s practice. Mean Lilith uses the average orbital path of the Moon’s apogee and moves smoothly through the zodiac. True Lilith tracks the actual moment-to-moment position, which can jump erratically. If your Lilith sign here differs from what another calculator showed you, the other calculator likely used True Lilith.

Can I get a deeper reading of any placement?

Yes — the free chart gives you the sign and house interpretation for each placement. For a full depth reading of your Chiron placement — the wound named precisely, the trap it sets, the healing path, and the gift — the Wound and the Gift report goes all the way in. For your Lilith placement, the Exiled Gift does the same. For how your chart interacts with another person’s, the Sacred Mirror reads both charts together.
