Recently, as I was thinking about the much-maligned sign of Capricorn and its ignored magical side, I was sent three words of the day. The first, atrabilious, perfectly describes the gloomy, morose stereotype people often pin on Capricorn. The second, entelechy, speaks to its true purpose: the realisation of potential through a vital life force. And finally, the argonaut — a person on a dangerous but rewarding quest — which is the heart of Capricorn’s journey.

On the whole, people think of Capricorn as atrabilious. This is one of my new favourite words, as it wraps up the whole of negative Capricorn. Of all the signs that are misunderstood, Capricorn certainly takes the hit for the great sins — selfishness, coldness, and greed.

Of course, very little of this is true. How many Capricorns do you know who are a mixture of Ebenezer Scrooge and Silas Marner? Mostly, they are quiet souls trying to get along in the world, just like the rest of us.

Saturn’s Bad Press and the Limits of Time

I’m afraid this is another case where we have to blame Saturn’s bad press. The more I think about it, the more it baffles me how we, as a culture, have demonised this planet. Ultimately, Saturn is about mastery — actualisation and bringing our dreams to reality. How can this be bad?

The Fourth and Tenth House Axis

Time is particularly significant to Capricorn. When constructing a chart by hand, you first find the Midheaven — the Capricorn point. The rest of the chart forms around this. There is a reason: manifestation. We move from the eternal world of soul (the circle) and hang it on the cross of matter (the angles). The soul becomes anchored in time and space.

No wonder Capricorn is such a serious sign. It has taken all the responsibility for the manifest world on its shoulders. Capricorn is the Earth father, the caretaker. The Sun plays, and Capricorn gets the bills.

The Path to Contentment

I am convinced that true happiness comes from seeking contentment. To be content, we must be satisfied with the choices we’ve made. Only Virgo knows the difference between a true potentiality and a daydream. We are not meant to manifest all dreams. While the twelfth house contains everything, the sixth house determines what of that is really ours. Once Virgo determines this, it hands the goods over to Capricorn.

The Myth of the Melusine

The ancient symbol for Capricorn is not the goat, but the melusine — a water-spirit who can walk the land as a human. In the tales, she marries a Prince but makes him promise her privacy while she bathes. As long as he honours the agreement, she gives him untold riches. Inevitably, one day, he peeks, sees her serpent side, and loses her forever.

Saturn, the ruler, must abide by the sacred agreement. It must honour the magical qualities of its better half — the water and the feeling nature. When it violates its promise, it sacrifices the magic. The earth becomes a dull, dead thing again.

The Living Earth

All Earth signs have a secret side that we must honour. Earth/Water is about life itself — what it means to take form, grow, and die. It is about infusing Earth with the awareness of consciousness. This is not a concept. It is what we live.

Ultimately, the union of the fourth and tenth houses is part of a deep mystery. This is where we transcend ordinary reality, escape our prisons, and our inner and outer worlds become one. Meditate on your fourth and tenth houses. Break the bonds of the ordinary — family, culture, and tradition — and move beyond them.
