Synastry: A Comprehensive Guide to Relationship Astrology

The first thing to understand about synastry is that a list of aspects between two charts tells you almost nothing about whether a relationship will last, deepen, or transform both people. This is the fundamental mistake that most synastry analysis makes — and it is the mistake that makes synastry feel like a parlour trick rather than a genuine tool for understanding what is actually happening between two people.

The aspects are real. The Venus trine Mars is real. The Sun conjunct Moon is real. But aspects do not exist in isolation. Every aspect between charts lands in a specific house, is coloured by the natal condition of each planet involved, is amplified or modified by what the composite chart shows, and operates within the larger structural blueprint that determines what kind of relationship this is and what it is asking of both people.

This guide is built around the structural approach to synastry that I have been developing and teaching since 2009. It begins not with Venus and Mars but with the framework that holds everything else: the angles, the outer planets, the nodal axis, and the inner scripts that determine who each person is looking for before a single aspect is assessed.

Where to Start: The Inner Script

Before comparing two charts, analyse each chart individually for its relationship signatures. The Descendant and its ruler. The Moon and Venus for men, the Sun and Mars for women. Hard aspects from Saturn and the outer planets to the relationship planets. The sign on the 12th house cusp — what is being projected onto partners rather than owned.

This inner script — the unconscious template for who counts as a potential partner — is set from birth and does not change in its essential form, though it can evolve in how it expresses. Two charts can have extraordinary inter-aspects and still not fulfil each other’s inner scripts. Two charts can have few obvious aspects and connect deeply because each person embodies what the other’s inner template is looking for.

The inner script is where synastry analysis begins. The aspects are what you look at after you understand what each person is actually seeking.

The Angles: Where Synastry Actually Lives

The angles — the Ascendant, Descendant, MC, and IC — are the most powerful points in any synastry comparison, and they are the most consistently underestimated. When one person’s planets conjunct another person’s angles, something structural is activated — something that operates at a more fundamental level than even the most compelling inter-aspects between planets.

The Outer Planets: Pluto, Neptune, Uranus

When an outer planet makes a significant contact in synastry, the relationship enters a different order of experience. These are the contacts that produce the specific quality of intensity that ordinary chemistry cannot reach.
