I think, of all the aspects in synastry, the most misinterpreted is the conjunction. It’s easy to understand why. There’s something romantic about a conjunction, something seductive. Two — or more — sometimes become one. How lovely. A basic archetype is at work here: the reconciliation of differing energies, and the merging of two separate forces. On the surface, this melding and union are rather Neptunian. This melding, however, is often an illusion. It is elusive and temporary.
Many of us began studying astrology because we wanted to find out how someone else ticked. This was usually a potential mate. As we studied charts, we got a particular thrill from discovering a conjunction, or many conjunctions. Now, in the hindsight of years and experience with synastry, the folly of this is laughable to me. I was as guilty as any, perhaps more so. I thought and dreamed of conjunctions as merging, passion, intensity, oneness, unspoken communication, and instant, intuitive understanding. I longed to see lots of conjunctions. If I couldn’t get them, I would settle for trines and sextiles. After all, the books told me that is what you need to make a go of it. Throw a bit of Saturn in there, and you’re riding off into the sunset together.
Well, no.
The Duality of Conjunctions
Relationships need a purpose, and the soft aspects do not provide that. But that’s an article for another day. First of all, the conjunction is not considered a soft aspect — a lot of astrology newbies miss this. In fact, it’s a hard one, right alongside squares, oppositions, and semi-squares. So where does this myth about the conjunction come from?
The truth is that there are two conjunctions: the conjunction of the hieros gamos — the sacred marriage — and the conjunction that occurs when the irresistible force meets the immovable object. Astrologically speaking, they can both occur within the same conjunction. A lot of people don’t know this, or they don’t prepare for it.
Conjunctions carry the promise of bliss. At some level, we all long for bliss, and the sacred marriage is a powerful archetype. It represents bliss in all its forms — the joining of the material with the divine. Whether it’s the false bliss of drugs, alcohol, or sexual addiction, or the numinous bliss of sacred experience, we are still dealing with the archetype of the conjunctio. The Sacred Marriage, most often represented by a conjunction of the Sun and the Moon, is one of the major steps in the alchemical process. It represents not the process that results in union, but union itself. It is the promise of a non-dual world, where we are at one with everything.
This is what we’re hoping for when we see conjunctions between our charts and the charts of those we love. My Sun and your Moon, my Venus and your Mars — ah, it takes the breath away.

Conjunctions as an Impulsive Force
Alas, the fundamental numerical archetype behind the conjunction is the one. The circle divided by one. The one is a very different animal — not entirely Neptunian; in fact, not Neptunian at all. It’s more like Mars. More like Aries: wilful, headstrong, and a bit unpredictable. The actions of the conjunction are not always well thought out. This is because the conjunction is impulsive. Its actions come entirely from within. It doesn’t bounce its ideas off any other planet before it makes a move.
Have you ever noticed when you have a conjunction of two or more planets tied to another by aspect? The conjunction will usually make the first move, and the other planet will fall into line behind it. Having two or more planets on or around the same degree gives it a position of power. Now, if only it knew what it was doing.
Duality gives us a sense of other, of partnership. We relate to something out there. A conjunction can behave as if it’s complete within itself. However, within the conjunction itself, all is not peaceful. Each of the planets will fight for supremacy, tussling with one another over who has the purest expression.
Take a Moon/Uranus conjunction, for instance. The Moon, by its very nature, wants to belong. It wants things to feel comforting, comfortable, and familiar. With this conjunction, however, Uranus will often hijack the very things the Moon relies on to feel secure. It has easy access to this because it’s so near. Uranus knows the Moon and what the Moon needs. It then says, “Aha, but you didn’t know you need this…” as it pulls the comfy soft rug from under the Moon’s feet and takes it on a joyride through dangerous and unfamiliar territory.
Because it’s a conjunction, the Moon secretly does want to be swept up and taken away to new lands — but it was afraid of saying so.
Reconciliation and the Outer Planets
It may take a lifetime for this aspect to really come into its own. It takes time for Uranus to anchor itself to the lunar needs and for the Moon to accept its need for change. What the conjunction does is allow for swift and dramatic access to experience. We have an even more pronounced dramatic shift when the two planets straddle the cusp of two signs. Adjacent signs have a hard time relating. Sometimes these aspects are irreconcilable, like bad marriages.
Within a natal chart, some planets have an easier time reconciling their close proximity than others. The Moon will blend very willingly with Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter. It will struggle, however, with Mars and Saturn. Mercury, being the changeable fellow he is, will happily take on different faces and masks to perform his duties. Venus may treat the other planet as a long-lost acolyte, but she will turn on him if she doesn’t get her due. Mars and Jupiter will blow their way through. Saturn will throw his sombre weight around.
But that’s nothing compared to when the three bullies move in. You know them, the hooligans: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Don’t let Neptune fool you — he’s trouble under that pretty face. The outer planets will attempt to change the nature of any planet they conjunct completely. They may do so in many intense and larger-than-life ways. It’s as though we’re meant to live out a personal drama of the outer planet’s creative force. This is usually very hard on us poor mortals. We can carry the archetype not only for ourselves but for those around us.
The Sun’s Integrating Force
Conjunctions with the Sun are different beings entirely. The Sun is magical that way. The Sun itself is an integrating and consolidating force — the only thing that is stronger than anything that touches it, not including the Moon.
The Sun is our very life force. When he is in aspect, and especially when he is conjunct another planet, the creative power is there to integrate and absorb that planet’s true essence into his own light, enhancing our conscious awareness. When the Sun and Pluto are conjunct, for example, life will automatically draw us into situations where our personal power is tested. We assume that it’s Pluto out to get us. But it’s the Sun’s strength that really matters. The Sun works to integrate and absorb Pluto’s true power into our conscious awareness. It’s a subtle but important difference.
You can see this very clearly when the Sun makes conjunctions via secondary progression. The entire chart is infused with that planet’s energy for the duration of the conjunction — two or three years. It isn’t an easy ride. But usually, we sense the purpose behind its manifestation when the Sun makes conjunctions.
Conjunctions in Synastry

Venus and Mars in conjunction promise attraction and desire, but not necessarily intimacy, openness, or emotional bonding. Their chemistry can quickly subside without the reinforcement of other elements in the charts. They are, purely and simply, about attraction and desire. They can grow cold very easily without the rest of the charts to buoy them up.
When there are a lot of conjunctions between charts, life is very stimulating. It can also be exhausting. Everything about the relationship seems to be pitched at an extreme level: off again, on again, dramatic turns, and exaggerated circumstances. I’ve always felt that Romeo and Juliet had a mass of conjunctions between them. Nothing else could explain how everything went so very wrong for those two.
The other thing that newbies don’t take into consideration, as they search for romantic conjunctions between charts, is that the expression of that planet is going to depend a lot on what it’s doing in the natal chart. This is why a list of aspects between charts is fairly useless in interpreting whether a couple will get along. Say we have that longed-for Venus/Mars conjunction. But what if the Mars person has Mars square Uranus? That on-again, off-again energy would also make a square to your Venus. Bliss forever? I think not, especially if the Mars/Venus conjunction is in a sign that needs security. An air sign conjunction would fare better.
So go on, keep looking for those conjunctions. I dare you.

The last two paragraphs nailed it!
The best, most intense, most exhausting relationship I have ever been in was with someone only six weeks younger than I. Enough conjunctions to make your head spin! And both of us had multiple, busy stelliums, so even if only one planet conjuncted the other’s stellium there were at least three other aspects to consider from the outside.
Oh, argh… yes, exhausting is the word for it! But I enjoyed the hell out of it. :) (I like difficult relationships. *winks*)

I did notice it, that one or two conjunctions that pretty sets up the theme of the union, then the rest of the aspects just sort of follow the leader. Some of the other aspects though ‘pushes’ the leader if they are closer in theme and resonance. So there the ‘trainwreck’ effect is pretty much in place. I would say it would be great in the beginning, until it becomes exhausting and downright draining. Frequent breaks from each other’s presence becomes and art with this type of relationship.
What about conjunctions to points, such as the ascendant or IC/MC ?
Hi, f. I deliberately didn’t talk about conjunctions to angles, because that is a different beast entirely. Planet to planet connections can’t really be compared to planet/angle contacts, because the angle is a unique energetic being. I will be writing about planet/angle contacts very soon.
Did you ever get around to this? I’ve been tirelessly looking into conjunctions in synastry specifically between the angles and if you could, your insight might be just what I’ve been looking for. I realize this thread is a decade old but here’s hoping!

How i laughed when I read this article! Yes I too was inspired to learn astrology while I was in a my relationship where my Gemini Venus was in exact conjunction (to one minute of arc) with his his Mars, both being transited by Pluto! Did it last ….no of course not but boy did I learn a lot about desire lust and obsession. The agony and the ecstasy! What an experience but it wasnt a relationship that could ever become something real or have any duration. We lasted two years on and off and he left me for someone with more money and no kids!
The great thing was looking back the relationship passed with the pluto transit and the astrology remained as a true passion!!!

I am a leo w/taurus moon, mercury,venus,mars in virgo and I am excitedly passionately in love and lust with as close to perfect for me virgo w/virgo moon, leo mercury, venus and mars in virgo mutually conjuncting my venus and mars virgo. We truly “feel” each other and understand each other. So what does this mean? Are you saying this probably won’t last? After all the drama I went thru with my crazy ex (do you remember that crazy cold and heartless Aquarian that you helped me get over) I want to hold on to the joy I have. I’m going to read the post again to make sure that I understand, because I’m keeping him. Mine! Hi Pearl. Astrology can never tell you whether or not a relationship will last (if any astrologer tells you this, they’re lying). What it can do is describe the energy involved between two people. Planets that are in conjunction can go to extremes. The ‘happily ever after’ feeling will, down the line, experience some rough days–as when the conjunction will experience a hard outer planet transit, for example. But it doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance. Synastry depends on a lot more than contact between inner planets. It’s a very complex and delicate art. I’m very happy that you’re happy and if you remain tolerant of one another you’ll be fine.

His ascendant is 20 degrees Leo and my sun is at 23 degrees Leo. I will heed your advice and use tolerance as a mantra. He is very tolerant and level headed. A welcome change into my life. Well, there you go…a Sun/Ascendant conjunction is usually lovely–again, no guarantee of longevity, but usually a very warm and affectionate tie. Conjunctions from the lights to the angles are very powerful (more on this next time) and immediately felt. Good luck, and Happy Holidays to you, too.

an advantage of being up at 6 am(UK time) – mind too active to sleep – is that I have time and peace to browse. This is such an insightful piece, written with your usual elegance and impact. Speaking as one with six Leo planets including the Sun all conjunct with Saturn and Pluto in the Twelfth House, all linked to both Uranus and Neptune, I can certainly validate….. “….we’re meant to live out a personal drama of the outer planet’s creative force, and it’s usually very hard on us poor mortals. We can carry the archetype not only for ourselves, but for those around us…..” The main wrestles of my life have been with my familial inheritance and with my relationship with that which lies beyond this world…..
However, the good news for similarly challenged folk out there is that conjunctions really DO function as that grit in the oyster, provided that you take on the work in as honest a way as you can. I have a CV which is a pearl of great variety and scope – and my husband and I are still happily wrestling away after a tempestuous thirty years!
Hi Dawn, Great article as usual! I found really helpful in better understanding a synastry conjunction I had been wondering about. I recently began a committted relationship in which my Saturn is right on his Mercury and his Saturn (and Chiron) is conjunct my Mercury/Sun. It sure feels like he and I are in it come hell or high water even though it’s just begun!
so the person i know has his moon conjunct my mercury and Venus. but my sun,mercury and venus are all in the same sign, my mercury and venus are conjunct each other, but not conjunct my sun, and his moon is also not conjunct my sun. However, i was curious, and if he had been born a day later, his moon would be almost exactly conjunct my sun, but not conjunct my mercury or venus. would it have been more beneficial do you think, for his moon to be conjunct only my sun? or is it better the way it is?
We get into dangerous territory if we fragment charts into lists of aspects. Real synastry takes into consideration each person’s psychological needs and relationship inclinations. Whether you are better off with your current Moon/Venus-Mercury conjunction or whether you would be better with a Sun/Moon conjunction has to do with whether the Sun or Moon is part of your relationship ‘signature.’ Anyway, it’s better not to speculate. You were born with the chart you were born with, and that is no accident. It’s better to do the best with what we actually have, and a Moon/Venus-Mercury conjunction is no small thing.

I’m so happy I found your website… I love the way you write, I’m not really a big reader unless it’s about aspects I’m trying to figure out and then I’m just sloothing through information like I’m on a mission, but with you I actually enjoy your style. Natally I have moon conjunct Neptune and moon conjunct Uranus. moon conjunct Uranus has gotten me in a lot of trouble due to the strange impulses it gives me and my brusque demeanor accompanied with Neptune, I go from being completely and unintentionally rebellious to googoogaga over somebodies plight. moon and Neptune… I can know someone for five minutes and instantly find myself cuddling them. like, what the heck? and I don’t even realize it’s happening until it’s happening. it’s just that automatic. i also have sun conjunct Saturn and sun conjunct Neptune. i was considering pursuing a man who has his moon conjunct my sun, his Saturn conjunct my sun and my Saturn conjunct his moon, (most of these aspects we both have natally… I also wanted to add that I read your article about chiron/moon. my chiron opposes his moon and his chiron opposes my sun (both natally)) his Venus is conjunct Uranus, conjunct Neptune and conjunct mercury which all three conjunct my moon. obviously that would mean his Venus is conjunct my Neptune and Uranus aswell. and currently I’m going through a really unbearable pluto conjunct moon transit. with a uranus square moon transit. I honestly think I’m losing my mind sometimes. Anyways maybe I’ll probably just steer clear of talking to him, I don’t think I can handle all of the drama that it sounds like it will create.

Do duad charts have importance in synastry? How much weight do u give to duad to natal synastry ( as in equal to/ more than/less than natal to natal)?

Great article! I had been searching for a while for an article that addressed conjunctions in synastry that touch an afflicted natal planet and was relieved to stumble upon this. I have a venus-mars conjunction with my boyfriend (he is venus in virgo, I am mars in virgo). It is our closest aspect. We also have mars conjunct mars by a lesser degree. My ascendant is sagittarius and the venus-mars conjunction (as well as mars-mars conjunction) is also exactly squaring my ascendant. (I have a natal mars-ascendant square obviously). I am wondering what this might indicate. I’m curious about what a square to my ascendant might feel like for him considering the conjunction is also at play. I really enjoyed your description of the synastry conjunction activating a natal uranus aspect, but I’m having trouble applying this to my own situation because I assume an outer planet compared to an ascendant act very differently. If you could give me any insight into this it would be really helpful. Thanks!
When any person’s planets are in aspect, especially hard aspect, to our angles, those angles are engaged and stimulated by the contact. If the Asc/Dsc is involved, the planet both prods us to our individuality and urges us to reevaluate the way we handle partnership. It can be an extremely important contact, with the angle person reacting in a highly sensitive manner to the planet person.

I am actually a believer in the more traditional aspects that spell harmony: sun/moon, sun/venus, venus/moon conjunctions in particular. This is based on both experience, and astrological time tested real life stories. I think regardless of whether people think oppositions or squares may add a touch of “excitement” (or enlightenment) a successful marriage is based on harmony, comfort and durability – not on excitement or enlightenment. I just got married this year. My hubby and I share a sun/moon, sun/venus. moon/venus and mercury/venus conjunction. Almost every situation that crops us we solve with either love, communication, compromise or cooperativeness. It might sound corny, but niceness is never to be underestimated. Conjunctions are “niceness” and are what friendships and enduring love are based on.
I wish more people felt the way you do. Sadly, my practice has taught me that most people are attracted to the harsh lessons of relationship, and perhaps this is the path for them. Very happy to hear that your relationship has brought you contentment.
We are in the earth to experience spiritual growth, not comfort. Spiritual growth for humans, needs friction, stress, challenge, and suffering. The best relationships are those that simultaneously uplift/support you, but also challenge you. The ego of course doesn’t like to be challenged at all. It always seeks maximum comfort.
In any case, when I have looked at the synastry of people who are particular close in longer relationships, I almost always see a combo of a lot of same and opposite Sign stuff between different symbols.

Thanks for being so absolutely spot on in your analysis of astrology and how it all interacts. I keep nodding “yes yes”, when I read your articles.
I’m in a relationship that sometimes had me wonder about things. Why everything he did, said, didnt do or didn’t say affected me so strongly. So many feelings that sliced like a knife through everything and i tried resisting but i’d be pulled down into unknown depths every time the first 2 years. Yet none of us have let go, don’t want to let go, personally because of the immense growth that happens and the love that I can’t explain and don’t know what is. I decided to look at our chart in synastry and predominantly found my eyes and interest consistently drawn to the moon/pluto double whammy between us. That i also have moon conjunct pluto in 8th house scorpio natally just put even more emphasis on it all. I didnt know what it meant entirely, but then i found your article about pluto and had a bit of an aha-moment. Until then i couldn’t fully grasp why i felt he had such a powerful hold on me, and how weirdly even though it was so painful going through an emotional wringer every 2 weeks, it somehow stimulated the most creative parts of me. You describing the three outer planets as bullies is so spot on. And that the conjunctions are very often not oh so pleasant is so nice to read from an astrologer one trusts. Finally someone wrote what I had been feeling all the time.
In my relationship, I kept telling myself that i was the only one feeeling so much, could see he hides his feelings much better than i do and dislikes losing control like the plague, so it felt like only me being affected which made it all the more painful. With your article as interpreter, i tried looking at the charts with different eyes and a lot started becoming a bit clearer, cause i could intuitively analyze without emotions clouding my judgement. I understood that we both have this power over each other, of course in different areas and expressed differently etc, but something was similar, it wasn’t just me being affected, I also influenzed and had power. It was a scary realization. This power was something I had to understand so I could be ablte to tame it, so it didn’t become useless power-struggles, but rather a transformative force that could help both of us expand and grow. I didn’t and don’t want to fall into the more negative traits othat pluto contacts can generate. The need for control and tendency to manipulation or constant need for having to delve into the deep all the time became something I could notice when it came up, start stopping it in its tracks and saying hello to it before interacting, taking a moment to see if i should cool it or jump right in, started to reflect a lot more now that i could see more clearly.
By doing this for a while, i started seeing an improvement in how i felt, how i didnt get as vulnerable all the time, because i started owning how i felt, taking the steering-wheel back to me (his pluto in conjunct my moon-pluto) and being more honest about absolutely everything. In turn, this helped our relationship in spades ( still working, but I don’t complain ;-)).
With this, I had a talk with my partner, just casually about astrology as he was enquiring. I mentioned your article and how I could draw paralells to how we are toghether in certain situations and then he had an “aha-moment”, and nodded yes.
I’m Intimately living with this whether I’m with a partner or not, but I’m writing here to say thanks for giving me some perepective, for helping me understand more, cause at times its felt like a curse to feel so much so often (pisces ascendant with pluto contact doesn’t help things), and is confusing as blimey when a minute later I’m thinking “i’d never want to be without this, this struggle to understand my own existence, to just feel easy and good all the time. No thank you”.
It’s still not easy but I’m not wishing it to be. Wanted to let you know that your interpretation here hits very very close to home and you are very gifted in what you do. i really appreciate your work and look forward to new articles coming out :-)

This was very informative. I love your articles, you have such a deep understanding of astrology. I wanted to add that I resonated very much with Anyas story about her painful relationship and how much she gets out of it. I am in this situation now with someone who is not a sexual partner. Our relationship is very compelling physically and emotionally (albeit not acted upon). His Mars is conjunct my Desc-Vertex-Sun-Ceres and aspecting my Moon and almost all my planets and points). He throws me to the depths emotionally, but I have managed to keep a meta perspective on our dynamics, and this has helped me to accept the necessity of it. Our relationship is professional in nature and will only last a few months, but during this time I have gathered immense insight in my lifes most important issues, and I am very grateful for that. I have waited 54 years for this information! (I apologise for the lack of proper signs, I write this on a PC with a foreign setting). I have a question regarding First Meeting Charts (if you are still on this thread). I wonder if the FMC always will be descriptive of a particular relationship, even if the relationship ends and a new chart is created after a few years?

The first meeting chart holds. If you break up and get back together again, you get another meeting chart, but it’s chapter two in the story. It doesn’t ‘erase’ the first one.

A little correction: My Psyche is in the very last minute of Libra, so it is better to see it as zero degrees Scorpio for finding an ascpecting Eros. I see this mainly as an experiment.
I can agree with Juniper Sprinkles, and also this is my own experience that harmonic aspects between suns,moons,marses are blessed. I think the harmony of suns,moons,marses and ascendants are cardinally important. I had several relationships and other relations with planets in disharmonic elements than mines and with many squares and oppositions and these were terrible and absolutely did not work. But thanks for God I can live in my relatinship with many conjunctions and harmonic aspects. We have 30 exact aspects. We have 6 squares too,but the others are very strong and harmonic.The balance is so important. And I never felt before as strong connection with an other person as ours. The different is unspeakable wonderful.

Dawn, I’m hoping maybe you could help shine a light on my quest for understanding something. I have been researching the Yod pattern because I have 4 of them in my chart overlapping each other with a Sun/Saturn conjunction in the 8th as the Apex. My question is how significant is it, or what does it signify, if another also has a Yod in his chart that conjuncts your Yod pattern at all three points? I have combed through my astrology books and have read numerous articles about Yods online looking for an answer. There are articles about Yods being completed through Synastry (one person’s planet forms a Yod with the other person’s two planets) but nothing about how two people each have a Yod complete unto itself, conjuncting another person’s Yod. Is this really rare? Your article on conjunctions was definitely informative as we do have many conjunctions between us, including my Vertex conjunct his North Node and his anti-Vertex conjunct my Venus. And his ASC and apex is conjuncting my Sun/Saturn. This relationship has my head spinning. Feels so fated. We will see if we can pull it together from 1200 miles apart and side step other complications.
Again, any insights to this conjunct Yod thing would be really really appreciated!!!
Hi Savine, I’m afraid there is a lot of nonsense talked about yods. Please read my series on the inconjuncts to get a better idea of the mechanics of them. They aren’t so much ‘fateful’ as ‘pointed,’ and I’ll bet that your relationship feels fated for reasons other than the yods. Stick to the angles and the Vertex contacts. That’s where the attraction is, the feeling of fate. A yod focuses the potential of a sextile. The apex planet carries that energy. That’s the most important thing to remember.

I was wondering if you’ve come across angle and house overlays in synastry? I am looking at the charts of a grandparent grandchild and they have a limited number of planet aspects but all their angles and houses are conjunct AND in the same signs. The exception is that the AC is out of sign – last degree of scorpio to first degree Sag (and DSC obviously).
I’ve never come across this before. Have you?

I have come across this before; it occurs more often than you might think.
The angles represent our orientation to life, our North, South, East and West. If we have an overlay, we have an understanding. You understand and experience my houses the same way I do. If my Venus falls in my first, it will also fall in your first–I ‘get’ you, you ‘get’ me. I sometimes think that one of the hardest things to find in relationship is someone to see and know you as you see yourself. With this astrological set up, it’s a given.
There is someone I know who has a double sun moon conjunction within 3 degree orb …. interesting to say the least unexplainable.

I’ve never met someone who is so “perfect” in all aspects. I consider him the ideal, and he feels the same. Everything is so cozy and amorous. We never argue about anything. Makes a solid case for the power of conjunctions.
