Taurus: The Resurrection Man, the Power of Regeneration.
The Taurus/Scorpio Polarity
The Taurus/Scorpio polarity is often a difficult one for students to get a hold of. Partly, it’s because of the multi-level nature of Scorpio symbolism. Scorpion, Eagle? The Scorpion lives in the desert. The Eagle flies above the Earth. Not really very helpful for water imagery.
I blame the ongoing literal-mindedness of this age — the dark side of Pisces being Virgo’s pedantic mind-set. I blame it for reality TV, too. We understand Ram, Bull, Crab, Twins, Lions, Virgins and all the rest. But going back in time, the symbol for Scorpio was a winged serpent. The winged serpent was closer to what we would now know as a dragon. It mastered all the elements. It could walk the earth, fly, live in water, and come through fire. Above all, it was immortal.
Sadly, we now have to take a number of literal animals for what was once a single mythical one. Each one provides a truncated bit of the Scorpio mythology. The focal point, the thrust behind all of it, is immortality.

The creature could fly, and it could burn, but it lived both on land and in water. It could swim in the waters of the unconscious, then come back again to negotiate the earth. The Serpent goes hand in hand, in many cultures, with the chthonic tree of life — specifically, the tree of immortality.
Taurus: Stewardship and Renewal
Taurus is about having, but it is also about stewardship — honouring the material world and caring for it. All matter must come to the end of its cycle. Is absolute death at the end of all things? The magic of Taurus, the secret power, is in knowing that death is not an absolute. Taurus creates new life through understanding that shedding the old is not equal to death. One cannot hang on. But one can repair, heal, conjoin.
The Caduceus is a serpent crawling up the tree of life. The Ouroboros continues to swallow its tail. The Taurus will honour life’s cyclical, seasonal, self-healing process. It will let itself heal. The ultimate patience of Taurus is about having faith in the healing process.
The late nineties comic, the Resurrection Man, is about a man who is killed many times over — each time returning to life with a different gift. This is the higher Taurus power: the unending abundance of the earth. Taurus represents the generosity of life. It creates through the knowledge that we are never done. As seasons go by, more fruit is always on the way.
Scarcity is, in fact, a myth. Scarcity of spirit is nonexistent. Taurus’ magical knowledge is that we can regenerate not only ourselves, but our surroundings, without lifting a finger. When we throw away the accumulative side of Venusian desire, and have faith in self-repair, we will regenerate.
Taurus cuts itself off from the creative process by denying Scorpio and by losing touch with Venus. Those are the unhappy Taureans who cannot let go — whose lives can be full of physical losses — because the lesson is actually one of abundance. The Venus energy is not only about desire. It is primarily a connecting power. Esoteric astrology puts Venus as ruler of Gemini.
