To truly appreciate the deeper meaning of Sun Sign, it is vital to understand its role in feeling authentic. Without a conscious connection to our solar energy, we never feel “grown up.” Any planet aspecting the Sun must be integrated into the basic identity. Sun/Pluto must wield power and the ability to rebuild; Sun/Saturn must become its own authority; Sun/Mercury must master self-expression. The house holding the Sun provides an obvious direction, but its position affects the entire chart.
But what is the Sun, exactly? It is the first thing we learn, yet we hardly venture back to it once we get caught up in the myriad mysteries of the astrological art. Why bother with the simple Sun when there are harmonics, points, and new asteroids to explore? I’ve found that the longer I practice, the more of a mystery the Sun becomes. Giordano Bruno called the Sun the “heart” of the chart — a metaphor that only truly made sense to me after watching its power in the progressed chart.

Those who dismiss astrology because they only know the most basic elements have a point. Are you just an Aries, a Virgo, or an Aquarius? No. The idea that one-twelfth of the planet defines itself by month-long qualities is simplistic. Even defining ourselves solely by the Moon — which rules our physical life and changes signs every two days — has more immediate validity than a virtual month-long Sun sign that is actually one sign out of sync with the constellations.
Most of us don’t understand the function of the Sun. We use simplified characteristic traits that may or may not apply, neglecting how the Sun actually “works” to consolidate the chart. Consider Virgos: that most analytical of energies often refuses to “be” a Virgo, citing a messy house or a chaotic love life. Yet, in their very refusal to be boxed in, they hit the nail on the head, proving that the Sun’s energy is a process of creation, not a static list of behaviours.

one of the most important things i took from the work we did together was the value of the Sun in a chart. its placement by sign and house has really been overlooked and undervalued as a source of profound healing and purpose. i suspect thats because its energies have been misused for so long on this planet…..
as the progressed Scorpio Sun in my chart moved in oppoosition to a natal Moon Pluto square over the past couple of years – it – along with the natal Virgo Sun Saturn conjunction has been the source of an intense and transformative healing for much of the dark and obsessive qualities that accompanied a very complex lunar configuration.

Dawn for many years I tried to be a Leo, with a 0 degree Virgo it was easy, this was in the cusp days, before computer charts were available. Couldn’t escape reality, darn!

When we first met, my last boyfriend who was a virgo, told me that he’s a pragmatic virgo and that’s why he doesn’t believe in astrology:) As a virgo, he truly was a master of circular logic…I really don’t understand virgos…for me, it’s ok to be messy etc, but virgos can criticize you for it even though they are actually messier than you, unbeliavable…
