What a Venus Retrograde Is
Roughly every nineteen months, Venus appears to slow, stop and move backward through the zodiac for about six weeks. Nothing about the planet changes. What changes is how its themes arrive: less as new events, more as returns — old feelings, old people, old questions about what we value and what we will accept.
Venus describes attraction, affection, pleasure, money and worth. Retrograde, it asks us to look again at choices we made quickly.
The Scorpio Leg: October 3–25
Venus is not comfortable in Scorpio. Venus rules Libra and is traditionally considered in detriment in Scorpio, the opposite sign. In Libra, love wants fairness, harmony, the beauty of balanced exchange. In Scorpio, love wants something more total — complete transparency, the kind of intimacy that leaves nothing hidden. In the editorial tradition of this site: in Scorpio, Venus encounters the idea that loving something completely means being changed by it, and being changed means something of the former self is gone. Scorpio does not pretend this is comfortable.
When Venus turns retrograde in Scorpio, the material that tends to surface is intense: jealousy, a debt that was never discussed, a desire we told ourselves we had outgrown, a bond we cannot quite release.
A notable moment within this leg: the Sun–Venus conjunction on October 23. At the exact Sun–Venus conjunction in zodiacal longitude — often called a Venus cazimi in longitude-based practice — Venus is at 0°45′ Scorpio. This occurs near the midpoint of the retrograde period. Venus is about 6.5° south of the ecliptic at this moment, so it does not meet stricter definitions of cazimi requiring proximity in both longitude and latitude, and it is not a transit across the Sun’s disk. Astrologers who work with the longitude-based convention often associate this conjunction with a moment of clarification or intensification. Mercury stations retrograde about 3½ hours later on October 24. Pay attention to what becomes clear around October 23.
Useful questions for the Scorpio leg:
- Where am I holding on because letting go feels like losing control?
- What do I want from intimacy that I have not said aloud?
- Is there shared money, or an emotional debt, that needs an honest accounting?
The Libra Leg: October 25–November 13
Back in Libra — Venus’s own sign — the questions turn from depth to balance. Libra is concerned with fairness, partnership and grace. Here the review shifts toward the terms of our relationships: who gives, who adapts, and whether the arrangement is still fair to both people.
Venus returns to Libra early on October 25, roughly 29½ hours after the Sun–Venus conjunction. Many people find this leg quieter than the Scorpio one. The task is to translate what surfaced in October into a clear, kind adjustment — not necessarily a dramatic break.
Both planets station direct on November 13 — Mercury in the morning and Venus in the evening. The stations mark a change of direction; the full shadow period for Venus runs through December 15.
Practical Guidance
Common astrological timing preferences for Venus retrograde, held lightly — these are interpretive suggestions, not guarantees:
- Go slowly with new commitments where possible. Many astrologers suggest waiting until after November 13 — or until Venus clears its shadow in mid-December — before finalizing significant relationships, large purchases, or major changes. Necessary decisions should be made as needed; the retrograde does not make them unsafe.
- Expect possible returns. An ex, an old friend, or an old question may resurface. This is a common interpretive theme, not a prediction — treat whatever arises as information before treating it as destiny.
- Revalue. Retrograde Venus is traditionally considered a useful time to revisit prices, budgets and agreements that you will then act on once Venus is direct.
In Your Own Chart
Find 22°52′ Libra through 8°29′ Scorpio in your natal chart. The house or houses that range falls in can offer a useful area to focus the retrograde’s review. Any natal planet or angle between those degrees — especially your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or Ascendant — may bring these themes into focus. Squares and oppositions from natal positions outside that range can also be relevant depending on your chart. Note that different house systems may place this range differently.
For relationships: check both charts. If Venus is crossing a point the two of you share, this period can offer a useful time for reviewing the bond.
