Planets in Synastry: A Complete Guide to Every Planetary Contact

Based on the work of Dawn Bodrogi  ✦  The Inner Wheel

A synastry chart is not a list of aspects. It is a conversation between two complete human beings — each carrying their own planetary configuration, their own history, their own evolutionary agenda — who have come into contact with each other and begun to activate things in each other that would not have been activated alone.

Want to see this in your own charts? The free synastry calculator maps the contacts between two charts in seconds — all it takes is both birth dates.

Understanding what each planet does in that conversation is the foundation of genuine synastry work. Not “Venus trine Jupiter is a good aspect” — but what does Venus actually govern, what does Jupiter actually bring, and what happens specifically when these two planetary principles meet between two charts.

This guide covers every planet in the synastry chart — from the lights through the outer planets, plus Chiron, Lilith, and the Nodes — with a dedicated analysis of each planet’s specific function in a relationship chart. Each section links to the full pillar page for that planet.

How to Read a Synastry Chart

Before looking at individual planets, three principles govern how a synastry chart should be read:

No single aspect tells the whole story. A Venus trine Moon with a Saturn square Moon and a Pluto conjunct Moon is a very different emotional picture than any one of those aspects alone. The planets must be read as an integrated whole — a coherent portrait of what happens between two specific people.

The orb matters as much as the aspect type. A Venus conjunct Moon at 0.3° is an entirely different experience from a Venus conjunct Moon at 7°. The tighter the orb the more immediately and constantly the contact is felt. Dawn Bodrogi called contacts under 1.5° “Acute Bonds” — aspects felt at the level of the body before the mind has formed an opinion about them.

Both directions of the contact matter. Your Venus conjunct their Moon is a different experience from their Venus conjunct your Moon. In the first case you bring the Venusian quality to their emotional world. In the second case they bring it to yours. Both contacts are present in a synastry chart and both must be read.

“We are missing the essence of the chart. We are missing what the chart feels like from the inside.”

— Dawn Bodrogi

The Planets — Complete Guide

The Lights

☉ The Sun in Synastry

The Sun is the essence — the eternally creative life force that is each person’s core self. In synastry the Sun is the consolidating planet, the one that brings awareness and light to whatever it contacts. Dawn Bodrogi considered the Sun one of the two most essential planets in any chart — and was critical of any synastry approach that glossed over it in favor of more dramatically charged outer planet contacts. Hard aspects between the Suns indicate different ways of processing experience — which can be creatively stimulating rather than divisive. There is nothing malefic about the Sun.

☽ The Moon in Synastry

If you could only look at one planet in a synastry chart, it should be the Moon. The Moon governs emotional safety, daily rhythm, and what feels like home — the texture of shared life when the guard is down. The word “familiar” shares its root with “family.” Moon contacts describe whether two people’s emotional worlds recognise each other. You can sustain a relationship without compatible Venus contacts. It is very difficult to sustain one, particularly in shared domestic life, when the two Moons are fundamentally at odds.

The Personal Planets

☿ Mercury in Synastry

Mercury is the most underestimated planet in synastry. It determines whether two people can actually talk to each other — whether their minds meet, whether conversation nourishes or depletes, whether daily communication requires constant translation or flows with natural ease. In the early stages of a relationship Mercury contacts are easy to overlook. Over time they become the medium through which everything else is conducted.

♀ Venus in Synastry

Venus governs value before it governs love. What we consider worth having, worth protecting, worth investing in. In synastry, Venus contacts describe whether two people’s fundamental orientations toward what matters are compatible, complementary, or in conflict. The Venus to Venus contact sets the background tone of the relationship’s aesthetic and affective life. Venus to the personal planets describes how love meets identity, emotion, mind, and desire specifically.

♂ Mars in Synastry

Mars is notoriously hypersensitive — no matter what sign or aspects it has, it feels everything. In synastry Mars governs desire, drive, and the physical chemistry of the relationship. It is intensely sensitive to itself while often being insensitive to others. Dawn Bodrogi wrote extensively on the distinction between how Mars operates differently by gender, and on the confusion people carry about Mars and Venus’s separate functions in a relationship chart.

♃ Jupiter in Synastry

Jupiter in synastry is the planet of expansion — the force that makes life feel larger, more possible, more meaningful in the presence of another person. Jupiter contacts generate genuine optimism and growth. They are among the most immediately welcome contacts in a synastry chart. The shadow is inflation — the tendency to see more possibility than actually exists, to expand beyond the point where growth becomes destabilizing. Jupiter is most valuable when it operates alongside supportive Saturn contacts that give the expansion solid ground.

♄ Saturn in Synastry

No planet in synastry has a worse reputation than Saturn. No planet is more important for determining whether a relationship can endure. Saturn is the roommate that reminds you to do the laundry before the fumigators come — and someone with a healthy Saturn will help you do it without belittling you in the process. The Saturn problem in synastry is not Saturn itself. It is what happens when the Saturn person has not done their own Saturn work. When they have, Saturn’s devotion is absolute — Liz Greene’s phrase, cited by Dawn Bodrogi: when Saturn sees something it wants, it can act like “the most inflamed Mars.”

The Outer Planets

♅ Uranus in Synastry

Uranus is not the planet of disruption. It is the planet of liberation — the force that breaks what has become rigid not out of destruction but out of evolutionary necessity. Uranus contacts in synastry activate the planet person’s individuation process in the area the contacted planet governs. The habitual way of operating — the settled emotional pattern, the comfortable mode of identity — is suddenly electrified and called into question. Uranus does not break what is healthy. It breaks only what was preventing what is real from emerging.

♆ Neptune in Synastry

Neptune in synastry creates the most beautiful and the most dangerous contacts in a relationship chart simultaneously. Beautiful because genuine Neptune contacts create a quality of spiritual recognition that transcends the ordinary. Dangerous because Neptune dissolves not just boundaries but also the clarity that healthy relationships require. What Neptune conceals is not the truth about the other person. It is the truth about what we most need love to be.

♇ Pluto in Synastry

Pluto does not simply intensify a relationship. It transforms the people within it. When one person’s Pluto makes significant contact with another person’s personal planets, the Pluto person carries the transformative force that the other person needs — and often fears — in order to become more fully themselves. Pluto contacts do not destroy what is real. They destroy only what was never real to begin with.

The Transpersonal Bodies

⚷ Chiron in Synastry

Chiron governs the wound that becomes the gift — the place where early injury, properly integrated, becomes the source of a person’s deepest capacity for healing and understanding. In synastry, Chiron contacts describe where one person’s wound is activated by another’s planetary energy, and where genuine healing is possible. The Chiron person’s vulnerability is the doorway through which the relationship’s deepest work happens.

⚸ Black Moon Lilith in Synastry

Black Moon Lilith marks the apogee of the Moon’s orbit — the point furthest from Earth, the territory of what has been exiled. In synastry, Lilith contacts activate the abandoned wound in the Lilith person through contact with the other person’s planets. The energy is raw, compelling, and frequently disorienting — because what Lilith carries is precisely what was most deeply rejected in early experience.

☊ The Lunar Nodes in Synastry

The Lunar Nodes describe the soul’s evolutionary axis — what a person is moving away from (South Node) and what they are moving toward (North Node) in this lifetime. In synastry, Nodal contacts describe whether the relationship serves each person’s evolutionary development — and often why it feels fated or karmic in a way that ordinary relationships do not. Conjunctions to the Nodal axis are among the most significant contacts in any synastry chart.

Reading the Full Planetary Picture

The planets work together as a system in a synastry chart. No single contact determines a relationship. What matters is the pattern — the coherent picture that emerges when all the significant contacts are read together.

A useful framework for reading the complete picture is to organize the planets by what they govern in a relationship:

Emotional Foundation

Moon contacts — whether two people feel emotionally safe and at home with each other. The most important contacts for sustained daily life together.

Creative Identity

Sun contacts — how two people’s core selves meet, illuminate each other, and process shared experience.

Love and Values

Venus contacts — whether two people find each other genuinely beautiful, whether their value systems are compatible or complementary.

Desire and Drive

Mars contacts — physical chemistry, erotic energy, how desire and will meet between two people.

Communication

Mercury contacts — whether two minds can genuinely talk to each other, whether conversation nourishes or depletes.

Structural Endurance

Saturn contacts — whether the relationship has the foundation to sustain itself over time. The most important contacts for long-term commitment.

Expansion and Meaning

Jupiter contacts — whether being together makes life larger, more meaningful, more philosophically rich.

Transformation

Pluto, Uranus, Neptune contacts — the deeper evolutionary forces operating in the relationship, the places where each person is changed by the other’s presence.

A synastry chart is not a compatibility verdict. It is a portrait of two people meeting — and what that meeting asks of both of them.
